Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, nail care has been playing a growing role in the cosmetics market. In fact, next to enamels and products for make up, more and more formulations, with a specific effect on nail disorders, have been commercialized. Products claiming moisturizing effects for brittle and weakened nails; formulations with bleaching efficacy, with a hardener claim for the lamina; or a softening effect for the cuticles have been produced.
Although the Regulation 1223/2009 states the assessment of cosmetic safety and efficacy, until now, it has been very difficult to accomplish these legislative requests for nail products. A number of ingredients, some of them dangerous, were used in these kind of products, and only very few studies regarding their safety and efficacy have been published.
In this Special Issue, the aspects related to the evaluation of the safety and efficacy of nail care product will be discussed. I strongly believe that the matter is very important and that this Special issue will be useful to clarify the critical points related to the development of products for nails. It will also allow to disseminate the best approaches to evaluate the safety of ingredients and finished products for nail care, and to disclose the most suitable in vitro/in vivo protocols to support the claims.
