Dear Colleagues,
The global energy landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, with battery technologies at the heart of the transition toward electrification and renewable energy integration. In this context, coatings and advanced functional materials have emerged as critical enablers—offering powerful tools to tailor interfacial properties, suppress degradation mechanisms, and enhance ionic/electronic transport at both electrode and separator levels. From atomic-layer-deposited protective layers to novel polymer and ceramic composite coatings, these strategies are reshaping the design paradigms of next-generation batteries, including lithium-ion, solid-state, sodium-ion, and lithium–sulfur systems. However, translating laboratory-scale innovations into industrially viable, cost-effective processes remains a formidable hurdle, demanding deeper understanding of structure–property–performance relationships under realistic operating conditions. This Special Issue captures a pivotal moment where interdisciplinary efforts—spanning materials chemistry, surface engineering, and in situ characterization—are converging to bridge this gap, offering unprecedented opportunities for both fundamental discoveries and practical deployment.
Purpose Statement
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to innovative coatings and tailored materials for battery applications. We consider contributions addressing the design, synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation of protective layers, interfacial modifiers, and functional composites for electrodes, electrolytes, and separators.
The topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following lithium-battery-related topics:
- Surface engineering for stability enhancement,
- Artificial solid-electrolyte interphases,
- Self-healing coatings,
- Advanced deposition techniques,
- Scalable manufacturing approaches.
Both experimental and theoretical works that provide new mechanistic insights or demonstrate clear performance improvements are welcome. Through this collection, we seek to stimulate cross-sector dialogue and accelerate the translation of coating technologies from academic research to industrial practice, ultimately contributing to safer, more durable, and higher-performance energy storage systems.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
