Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Polymer-based composite coatings represent an important class of materials for various applications due to their capabilities to couple the elastic, optical, or wettability properties of the polymers with the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of metals, dielectrics, or ceramics. The ongoing research in this field is pivotal for addressing global challenges in sustainability, corrosion protection, energy storage, biomedical engineering, and smart packaging.

This Special Issue aims to capture the cutting-edge of this rapidly evolving field. It will serve as a platform for presenting high-quality research and comprehensive reviews that highlight recent innovations in the design, fabrication, characterization, and application of polymer composite coatings and films.

Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Novel Material Systems: development of composites with advanced nanofillers (e.g., 2D materials, cellulose nanocrystals, MXenes), bio-based polymers, and self-healing agents.
  • Advanced Functionalities: design of coatings and films with smart properties, such as stimuli-responsiveness, anti-fouling, anti-icing, superhydrophobicity, enhanced flame retardancy, and controlled release.
  • Innovative Processing Techniques: exploration of scalable and green fabrication methods, including 3D printing, layer-by-layer assembly, and solvent-free processes.
  • Performance and Characterization: in-depth studies on the mechanical, barrier, thermal, and tribological performance, utilizing advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, and in situ characterization.
  • Emerging Applications: reports on applications in energy (e.g., batteries, supercapacitors), aerospace, biomedical devices, active packaging, and anti-corrosive coatings.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
