Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, composite coatings have attracted significant attention across both academia and industry due to their ability to integrate mechanical strength, wear resistance, and functional versatility into a single protective layer. These advanced coatings are increasingly engineered to meet the multifaceted demands of modern applications, ranging from tribological components and biomedical devices to the aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.
This Special Issue focuses on the mechanical, wear, and functional properties of composite coatings, emphasizing the interdisciplinary innovations in coating materials, fabrication processes, and performance optimization. The integration of hard phases (e.g., ceramics, carbides, and oxides) with polymeric or metallic matrices, along with the development of gradient, multilayer, and nanostructured architectures, has enabled the design of coatings with tailored hardness, adhesion, toughness, self-lubrication, and stimulus-responsive behaviors.
In addition to experimental investigations, we encourage the submission of theoretical and computational modeling efforts that provide insights into coating design, failure prediction, and optimization to this Special Issue. Works focusing on advanced characterization techniques, such as nanoindentation, in situ wear testing, and high-resolution microscopy, are of particular interest to deepen our understanding of structure–property relationships.
Potential topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Development of composite coatings with enhanced mechanical and tribological properties;
- Wear-resistant and self-healing coating systems;
- Multifunctional coatings for biomedical, aerospace, marine, or energy applications;
- Coatings with anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, and thermal barrier properties;
- Nanocomposite and multilayered coatings: design, synthesis, and applications;
- Structure–property relationships in composite coatings;
- Advanced characterization techniques for coating performance analysis;
- Surface modification and interface engineering in coating systems;
- Coatings under extreme service environments: high temperature, pressure, or radiation;
- Modeling and simulation of coating behavior under mechanical loading.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
