Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The development of functional coatings and films has attracted increasing interest due to their potential to improve food quality, safety, and shelf life.
This Special Issue will focus on recent advances in coatings and films designed for food applications, including edible and active coatings, biodegradable films, biopolymer-based materials, and sustainable alternatives for food preservation and packaging.
We welcome studies on the incorporation of bioactive compounds, antioxidants, antimicrobials, vitamins, phenolic compounds, essential oils, and nanostructured systems into coatings and films. Research addressing the physicochemical, mechanical, barrier, structural, and functional properties of these materials is also encouraged. Particular interest will be given to studies evaluating their application in real food systems, including effects on stability, quality, safety, and shelf life.
Original research articles and review papers covering the development, characterization, optimization, and application of functional coatings and films are welcome. Contributions combining food science, materials science, nanotechnology, and sustainable approaches are particularly encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
