Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wear is one of the primary causes of material degradation and performance loss in engineering components operating under demanding mechanical, thermal, and environmental conditions. Coatings play a critical role in mitigating wear by enhancing surface properties, extending service life, and enabling the use of lightweight or cost-effective substrates in advanced applications. Continuous developments in coating materials, manufacturing routes, and performance evaluation methods have significantly expanded the design space of wear-resistant systems.

This Special Issue, “Coatings for Wear Resistance: Materials, Manufacturing and Performance”, aims to provide a comprehensive platform for recent scientific and technological advances in coating-based solutions for wear protection. It covers the entire value chain, from materials design and processing to microstructural tailoring, tribological performance, and real-world applications. Particular emphasis is placed on emerging coating materials, innovative manufacturing and deposition techniques, and the integration of coatings with advanced structural concepts and modern manufacturing technologies.

For this Special Issue, we welcome original research articles and high-quality review papers addressing fundamental mechanisms, processing–structure–property relationships, and application-driven performance assessments of wear-resistant coatings. Contributions that bridge experimental studies with modeling, simulation, and data-driven approaches are especially encouraged. Interdisciplinary studies that connect surface engineering with materials science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing technologies are also within the scope of this Issue.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Wear-resistant metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and composite coatings;
  • Advanced coating materials design and functional architectures;
  • Thermal spray, PVD, CVD, electrochemical, and hybrid coating processes;
  • Coatings for additively manufactured and architected structures;
  • Microstructure–wear performance relationships;
  • Tribological testing, characterization, and performance evaluation;
  • Modeling, simulation, and predictive approaches for coating wear behavior;

We hope this Special Issue will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners working on advanced coating technologies for wear resistance and surface performance.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
