Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Cold spray is an emerging metal deposition technology that uses high-pressure gas to propel micron-sized particles through a de Laval nozzle at supersonic speeds. Upon impact with the substrate, these particles form dense, high-performance coatings. This technique offers key advantages—including high bonding strength, high hardness, and a low processing temperature—which have made it a growing focus in surface engineering research.
The severe plastic deformation and high-strain-rate conditions in cold spray drive complex microstructural evolution, such as dynamic recrystallization and phase transformation, potentially giving rise to novel coating properties. With advances in cold-spray equipment, hybrid techniques (e.g., laser-assisted cold spray, peening-particle-assisted spraying), and integrated post-processing methods (e.g., hot rolling, friction stir welding), the performance of cold-spray coatings continues to improve, opening new opportunities for industrial deployment. Cold spray has demonstrated great potential in sectors including aerospace, biomedical engineering, energy, electronics, and semiconductors, being used for surface strengthening, functionalization, additive manufacturing, repair, and remanufacturing. To accelerate its adoption and maximize its impact, global awareness of ongoing research and applications is essential.
This Special Issue on Spray Coatings aims to highlight the latest advancements in cold-spray technology, with a focus on coating microstructure, mechanical performance, and innovative applications across multiple fields. We invite submissions of original research articles and comprehensive reviews in areas including, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Novel coating microstructures induced by cold spray.
- Mechanical properties of cold-sprayed coatings.
- Advanced process diagnostics and characterization methods.
- Emerging applications using cold spray.
We look forward to your contributions and to showcasing cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of cold-spray technology.
Sincerely,
Dr. Xin Chu

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
