Dear Colleagues,
Recent advances in artificial intelligence, advanced control theory and non-destructive evaluation are providing new methodological support for coating research and engineering applications. Conventional coating development often treats formulation design, fabrication processes and service performance evaluation as relatively independent stages, which may lead to prolonged development cycles, over-reliance on experience for process parameters, limited process stability, and delayed failure analysis. With the development of intelligent manufacturing, industrial digitalization and materials informatics, coating research is increasingly shifting from single-property optimization toward the coordinated development of design, fabrication, inspection and service assessment.
This Special Issue focuses on intelligent fabrication, data-driven modelling, process control, quality inspection and service performance evaluation throughout the coating life cycle. Particular attention will be paid to the application of advanced control methods in coating fabrication processes, artificial intelligence in coating design, process modelling and performance prediction, and non-destructive evaluation in coating quality assessment, defect identification and in-service condition monitoring. By promoting data integration and methodological convergence across design, fabrication, inspection and evaluation, this Special Issue aims to support the transition of coating research and manufacturing from trial-and-error approaches to model-driven, data-driven and intelligent decision-making frameworks.
We welcome submissions from researchers working in coating materials, surface engineering, intelligent manufacturing, artificial intelligence, advanced control, non-destructive evaluation and reliability assessment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Adaptive control, model predictive control, robust control and optimal control methods for coating fabrication processes;
- Process modelling, parameter optimization and intelligent control for precision coating, plasma spraying, physical/chemical vapour deposition, electrodeposition, thermal spraying and related coating processes;
- Machine learning, deep learning and data-driven methods for coating formulation design, process window optimization and performance prediction;
- Computational simulation and data-driven modelling of coating/substrate interfacial behaviour, microstructural evolution and multiphysics coupling processes;
- Intelligent inspection and evaluation of coating quality indicators, including thickness, uniformity, porosity, adhesion, cracks and inclusions;
- Novel non-destructive evaluation methods and multi-source information fusion for detecting coating/substrate interfacial defects, internal defects and surface defects;
- Failure-mode identification and degradation modelling of coatings under corrosion, wear, ageing and delamination processes;
- Online health monitoring, remaining useful life prediction and reliability assessment of coatings during service.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
