Dear Colleagues,
From the pre-historic implants and prosthetic devices crafted from primary sources, such as wood or animal teeth, passing through the first marked development and systematization in the 1950s, biomaterials have become notably diverse and widespread, sophisticated and complex. While the so-called “first generation” group is mainly focused on bioinertness and encompasses structural materials for replacing hard tissues, the subsequent generations have evolved towards bioactivity, biodegradability, tissue regeneration and multifunctionality. This stimulating field continues to advance as current multidisciplinary research pushes boundaries to accomplish cutting-edge biomaterials capable of simultaneously modulating and monitoring the host’s response. Needless to say, functional films and coatings play a significant role. Since biological interactions occur primarily at the material surface, it is possible to preserve the often-desirable bulk properties of the substrate while tailoring the overall performance in vivo. Bioactive hydroxyapatite for promoting osteogenesis, biomimetic antimicrobial films for preventing infection, or polymeric-based drug delivery coatings for controlling inflammation upon implantation are some of the numerous clinically tested or under-development examples that can be found in the literature.
In this Special Issue, we invite researchers to display their contributions in the development of “Functional Films and Coating Materials in Biomedical Applications”. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Production of novel functional films and coatings with different architectures and designs, chemical compositions and microstructures, and/or deposited by different and new deposition methods;
- Translation of knowledge from other research areas (e.g., automotive, tools…) into the biomedical field;
- Characterization of the functional properties (namely, mechanical behavior, antimicrobial and/or antibiofouling properties, anticorrosion or biodegradability behavior, bioactivity and/or drug delivery);
- In vitro and in vivo biocompatibility evaluation;
- Durability and scalability studies.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
