Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, represents a complex and heterogeneous group of chronic inflammatory disorders driven by dysregulated immune responses. Despite significant advances in therapeutic strategies, including biologics and targeted small molecules, substantial variability remains in disease behavior, treatment response and long-term outcomes. This heterogeneity highlights the urgent need for improved tools to enable precision medicine approaches in IBD.

In recent years, increasing attention has been directed toward the identification of biomarkers that can more accurately reflect underlying disease activity and guide clinical decision-making. Traditional markers, such as C-reactive protein and endoscopic assessment, provide valuable but incomplete insights, particularly in capturing subclinical or microscopic inflammation. Emerging evidence suggests that systemic immune signatures, including circulating cytokines and other molecular mediators, may offer a more refined understanding of disease states and immune regulation.

This Special Issue aims to bring together original research articles, reviews and methodological studies focusing on immune profiling, biomarker discovery and personalized disease stratification in IBD. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, cytokine signaling pathways, the integration of multi-omics approaches, non-invasive biomarkers of histologic activity and novel strategies for monitoring treatment response.

By integrating clinical, molecular and translational perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to advance the field toward more individualized and mechanism-based approaches to disease management, ultimately improving patient outcomes in inflammatory bowel disease.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Current Issues in Molecular Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
