Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Mitochondria are the main centres of energy production in the cell. Besides driving respiration and ATP production, mitochondria are central regulators of many other cellular functions, including cell death, cell differentiation, cell signalling, inflammation, and anabolism. In addition, mitochondria can be considered as integrator hubs connecting different cellular signals to the generation of an appropriate response to maintain cell homeostasis. As essential organelles, mitochondria require continuous surveillance to maintain their functional integrity. In this regard, several mitochondrial quality control mechanisms have been described, including mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial UPR (unfolded protein response), and selective degradation of damaged mitochondria by mitophagy. Importantly, alterations in these processes have been implicated in the development of different diseases, such as metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases, cancer, sarcopenia, and aging. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating mitochondrial quality control and the precise role of its deregulation in pathophysiology have just started to be identified.

This Special Issue aims to shed light on the connection between loss of mitochondrial quality and disease. We invite authors to contribute with original research articles as well as review articles. We encourage authors to submit studies addressing cellular and molecular aspects of mitochondrial quality control and/or its implications for health and disease.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
