Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease have been shown to develop through the effect of metal toxicity. Although toxicities caused by metals such as iron and copper have been previously reported, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of metal-induced physiological damage still remain to be completely elucidated. While neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases are on the rise worldwide, the associated metal toxicities in a rapidly industrialising society pose a threat that warrants further investigations to gain a complete overview. Interestingly, several metals otherwise present in the protein bound form and in metalloenzymes have been shown to produce a toxic effect on the neuronal system in response to certain cellular cues. Moreover, trace elements such as zinc and nickel that play crucial cellular functions under physiological conditions are also implicated in accelerating neuronal dysfunction.

The scope of this Special Issue is to report the latest progress in elucidating the molecular mechanisms and cellular alterations induced through metal toxicity that results in neuronal dysfunction and diseases. The overall aim of this issue to provide an overview gained through molecular biology, imaging, biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, omics and systems biology approaches and to identify the key molecules, signalling pathways, cellular events and responses involved in metal mediated responses that lead to loss in neuronal function and compromised neuronal development.

In this Special Issue, we are inviting contributions in the form of original research articles, reviews and perspective articles on all aspects of metal-induced neuronal alterations.
