Dear Colleagues,
The extracellular matrix (ECM) serves as an important scaffold for cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, and migration. However, the role of ECM in cell homeostasis goes far beyond structural mechanisms, extending to important ECM–cell communication and mediating cell–cell signaling. Taking this into account, in recent years, the importance of ECM in cancer progression has gained increasing interest. Exploring how extracellular–intracellular communication impacts cancer onset and progression is a key line of research, both in fundamental biology and in translational research.
In this Special Issue, we aim at highlighting studies of excellence that focus on at least one of the following aspects:
- ECM role on cancer onset and progression;
- ECM–cell communication in cancer;
- Impact of integrin-mediated signaling and cytoskeleton;
- ECM crosstalk with oxidative stress and DNA damage;
- Latest advances on cancer therapies focused on ECM–cell communication.
Together, this Special Issue is expected to raise awareness for an essential player in cancer: the ECM.
For this Special Issue, we invite authors as well as the participants of The COST Action CA20121 to submit novel work or reviews establishing the importance of oxidative stress in Extracellular-Intracellular Communication and Cancer Therapies.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
