Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Robotic technology is increasingly redefining the possibilities of minimally invasive esophagogastric cancer surgery. This Special Issue will provide a platform-agnostic overview of the evolving global landscape of robotic oesophageal and gastric cancer resection, bringing together perspectives from leading centres around the world. Contributions are expected to span emerging clinical evidence, technical innovation and the practical realities of implementing robotic programmes in complex oncological surgery. Alongside original research and contemporary reviews, authors are encouraged to explore how robotic techniques are influencing operative precision, perioperative outcomes and the training of the next generation of oesophagogastric surgeons. The issue also looks forward to the next phase of development, including digital integration, advanced imaging and intelligent surgical systems. Collectively, articles should aim to offer both a snapshot of current practices and insights into the future trajectory of robotic oesophagogastric cancer surgery.

We welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

  • Clinical outcomes—Perioperative and oncological results of robotic oesophagectomy and gastrectomy, including comparative studies with open and laparoscopic approaches.
  • Technical innovation—Novel operative techniques, anastomotic strategies, lymphadenectomy and approach-specific considerations.
  • Implementation science—Establishment and scaling robotic programmes in the context of complex oncological surgery; cost-effectiveness and healthcare system perspectives.
  • Surgical training and the learning curve—Simulation, proctorship, competency frameworks and credentialling for robotic upper GI surgery.
  • Perioperative care—Enhanced recovery, complications management and patient-reported outcomes in the robotic era.
  • Digital integration and intelligent surgical systems—Augmented reality, fluorescence imaging, AI-assisted decision-making and the future of the surgical console.
  • Global perspectives—Regional variation in adoption, access and outcomes.

Original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and high-quality narrative reviews are all welcome.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and assembling a collection that offers both a rigorous snapshot of current practices and a forward-looking perspective on the future of robotic oesophagogastric cancer surgery.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cancers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
