Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue entitled "Seismic Protection and Preparedness of the Built Environment" to be published in Buildings.

Earthquakes that have occurred in recent decades highlight the urgent need for methods and solutions aimed at reducing risk and mitigating adverse consequences for people and the built environment, including cultural heritage. At the same time, they call for new strategies to ensure effective and prompt responses to seismic events and related disasters.

In such a framework, this Special Issue intends to investigate emerging trends in seismic protection and preparedness, providing a platform to discuss open challenges and foster research in these fields. Specifically, it seeks to collect recent advancements, significant applications and innovative proposals focused on risk and vulnerability assessments, mitigation measures, preventive strategies and post-event evaluation methods at both building and urban scales.

The goal is to showcase how recent developments in experimental and numerical analyses have led to robust solutions for the evaluation and enhancement of seismic safety, while post-disaster studies have generated critical knowledge regarding the vulnerability of the built environment.

We welcome contributions addressing a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Structural health monitoring for early warnings;
  • Simplified methods for seismic vulnerability assessment at building and urban scales;
  • Advancement in testing, retrofitting and numerical modeling;
  • Socio-economic impact assessment;
  • Post-earthquake damage and loss assessment;
  • Relevant case study applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
