Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The construction industry is undergoing a significant transformation with the increasing adoption of structural adhesives as a reliable alternative to traditional mechanical fasteners. These adhesives enable lightweight, durable, and aesthetically pleasing structures while offering uniform stress distribution, improved seismic performance, and faster assembly. Recent breakthroughs in polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, hybrid formulations, and sustainable raw materials have produced high-performance adhesives with exceptional strength, long-term durability, and reduced environmental impact. Nevertheless, critical challenges remain regarding standardization, long-term performance prediction under real environmental conditions, fire resistance, and integration with emerging building materials such as cross-laminated timber, composites, and high-strength steels.

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue.

This Special Issue aims to present the latest scientific and technological advances in structural adhesives and their practical applications in modern building construction. It seeks to bridge fundamental research with engineering practice, fostering innovation in adhesive bonding for safer, more sustainable, and more efficient buildings. The topics covered are fully aligned with the scope of the present Journal, which focuses on advancements in construction materials, structural engineering, and sustainable building technologies.

Suggested themes and article types for submissions In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Novel structural adhesive formulations (epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic, hybrid, and bio-based)
  • Mechanical characterization and durability testing of adhesive joints in buildings
  • Adhesive bonding in timber, steel, concrete, and composite structures
  • Numerical modelling and finite element analysis of bonded connections
  • Sustainable and eco-friendly structural adhesives
  • Fire resistance, seismic behaviour, and long-term performance of adhesively bonded assemblies
  • Case studies and real-world applications in contemporary architecture and retrofitting
  • Standardization, quality control, and design guidelines for adhesive technology in buildings

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
