Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Geriatric medicine is a specialized field of the unique health needs of older adults. It involves the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that are common in the elderly, such as heart disease, cancer, cognitive impairment, and diabetes, and addresses issues like multiple long-term conditions and atypical disease presentation. Geriatric musculoskeletal and neural conditions include sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis. These physiological changes lead to reduced balance and mobility, increased risk of falls and fractures, and pain. Neural factors contributing to these issues include declines in nervous system integrity and plasticity, which can impair motor control and balance.

Thus, in geriatric physiotherapy, we aim to improve mobility, balance, strength, and function to maintain the independence and quality of life of the elderly. It involves individualized treatment plans that include exercises to strengthen muscles, improve balance to prevent falls, and manage chronic age-related conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and heart and lung disorders. Interventions can also include manual therapy and advice on mobility aids and home safety.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in musculoskeletal and neurological issues in elderly people. It emphasizes current insights and explores future directions for effective treatment and management. This Special Issue will provide a platform for all health scientists to research important breakthroughs in new prevention and therapeutic approaches in this field.

We seek to gather cutting-edge research and expert opinions that can deepen our understanding of the musculoskeletal and neurological issues in elderly people and pave the way for novel prevention and therapeutic approaches so that patients to have a good quality of life, i.e., non-pharmacological therapies such as exercise, mind–body techniques, diet counseling, neuropsychological treatments, etc.

Research articles, review articles, and short communications are invited. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers).
