Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Membrane proteins constitute a fundamental class of biomolecules that govern the interface between cells and their environment. By mediating signal transduction, solute transport, cell–cell communication, and energy conversion, these proteins are central to virtually every physiological process. It is estimated that membrane proteins represent nearly one-third of the proteome and comprise the majority of current therapeutic targets. Innovations in chemical biology, proteomics, and imaging have enabled the interrogation of membrane proteins in native-like environments, revealing how lipid composition, post-translational modifications, and protein–protein interactions modulate their function, shedding new light on how membrane proteins operate at the molecular level and how their dysfunction contributes to disease.

We are pleased to invite researchers and scholars to submit original research articles and comprehensive review papers to the Special Issue entitled “Molecular Mechanisms and Functional Roles of Integral Membrane Proteins in Health and Disease.” This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge advances that deepen our understanding of how membrane proteins function at the molecular level and how their dysregulation contributes to human disease.

This Special Issue aims to bring together original research articles and authoritative reviews that highlight recent progress in the field. Contributions span diverse classes of membrane proteins—including receptors, ion channels, transporters, and enzymes—and address their roles in normal physiology as well as in pathological conditions such as cancer, neurodegeneration, metabolic disorders, and infectious diseases. By integrating mechanistic insights with functional and translational perspectives, this collection aims to deepen our understanding of membrane protein biology and to inspire new strategies for therapeutic intervention.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following: Structural Biology of Membrane Proteins, Molecular Mechanisms of Membrane Protein Function, Membrane Protein–Lipid Interactions, Post-Translational Modifications and Regulation, Membrane Proteins in Physiology and Pathophysiology, Membrane Proteins as Therapeutic Targets, Computational and Systems Approaches, and Emerging Technologies and Methodologies

We look forward to receiving your contributions to this important upcoming issue in Biomolecules.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomolecules is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
