Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past decade, the study of cell death has rapidly expanded with the identification of novel mechanisms underpinning the complex molecular control systems of various cell death pathways. In addition to the classically studied mechanisms of apoptosis, new forms of Programmed Cell Death (PCD) are being uncovered, including necroptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis and many more. Regardless of the type of cell death, effective removal of dying cells by phagocytes plays a crucial role in regulating and maintaining tissue homeostasis.

It is important to decipher the complex and overlapping molecular control systems of cell death and cell clearance pathways, as defects in these processes have been linked to a variety of diseases such as cancer and inflammation. Importantly, understanding the molecular mechanisms of cell death and its impairment in many cancer types has led to the development of novel anti-cancer therapies. Moreover, many inflammatory disorders, including autoimmunity disorder, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and transplant rejections can be a result of enhanced inflammatory cell death. Thus, it is imperative to dissect the relationship between cell death, cell clearance and disease in order to develop much needed therapies.  

In our Special Issue of Biomolecules, “Cell Death and Clearance”, we encourage the submission of review and primary research articles that showcase both the role of cell death and clearance, and therapeutic approaches targeting these processes in disease settings.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Biomolecules is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
