Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Inflammation is an essential biological response to protect the organism from infections and other harmful threats, to remove deleterious agents, and to subsequently enable the recovery of damaged tissue. After the acute phase, a well-controlled termination of inflammation is necessary to prevent detrimental effects for the inflamed tissue. The respective molecular mechanisms, however, can be susceptible to dysregulation, leading to the perpetuation of inflammatory processes. Non-resolving inflammation, in turn, is a relevant component of various disorders and may contribute to the development and progression of malignant, cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, gastrointestinal, neurodegenerative, and autoimmune diseases. Thus, the precise assessment of the inflamed state is a critical medical issue, and biomarkers are an important tool in diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutical monitoring in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. However, the suitability of biomarkers depends on a variety of factors, such as sensitivity and specificity, stability and kinetics, as well as ease and reliability of detection. Moreover, understanding their regulation is crucial for assessing the suitability and significance of potential biomarkers.

The network underlying the molecular regulation of inflammation-related biomarkers can be complex and may include the interaction, activation, and cooperation of various mediators, receptors, signaling pathways, and transcription factors, post-transcriptional or -translational modifications, as well as transport and secretion processes. Therefore, this Special Issue aims at elucidating the molecular regulation of inflammation-associated blood biomarkers. We cordially invite you to submit original research articles or comprehensive reviews contributing to this field. Other article types, such as communications and perspectives, may also be considered if they fit the scope of the Special Issue.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Biomolecules is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
