Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue entitled “Extracellular Vesicles in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases.” This issue will highlight emerging concepts and recent advances in the biology, diagnostics, and therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) across the spectrum of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.

EVs, including exosomes and microvesicles, are now recognized as key mediators of intercellular communication, transferring proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids that modulate target-cell function. In cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, EVs influence inflammation, fibrosis, angiogenesis, thrombosis, and metabolic regulation. EVs derived from cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, immune cells, stem cells, adipocytes, and hepatocytes coordinate heart–metabolic organ cross-talk and can either propagate injury or promote repair. Emerging evidence indicates that food-derived EVs, such as those obtained from milk and plants, also exert therapeutic effects in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. EVs and EV-based hybrid nanoparticle drug delivery systems are another emerging research area. Advances in omics and single-vesicle technologies are driving the discovery of EV-based biomarkers and therapeutics, although challenges in heterogeneity and standardization remain. This field holds major translational promise for cardiometabolic disease diagnosis and treatment.

We welcome submissions that explore EV biogenesis, cargo profiling, intercellular communication, biomarker discovery, and EV-based interventions (therapeutic activities, drug delivery, EV-hybrid vesicles, and similar) in conditions such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, heart failure, obesity, diabetes, NAFLD/MASLD, and related complications. Studies employing cellular, molecular, omics, animal, and clinical approaches are encouraged.

The Special Issue invites a broad range of article types, including the following:

  • Original research articles;
  • Reviews and mini-reviews;
  • Perspectives/commentaries;
  • Brief reports and letters.

We aim to provide a platform for multidisciplinary exchange and accelerate the translation of EV science toward clinical application.

All submissions will undergo rigorous peer review and will be published on a rolling basis.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
