Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The human cardiovascular system presents unique challenges to medical device developers. The hemodynamic environment is not only harsh, but varies widely across cardiovascular sub-systems (e.g., arteries/veins, semilunar/atrioventricular valves, other internal cardiac structures, venous valves). Complex biological mechanisms also contribute to device failure through calcification and thrombosis. Further complicating matters, recent regulatory changes may limit the use of certain materials (e.g., PFAS) in future devices. These challenges mandate the need for the continued development of new and innovative biomaterials for use in the cardiovascular system.
The objective of this Special Issue is to present a collection of state-of-the-art research focused on the development, application and regulation of the advanced cardiovascular biomaterials and associated devices. We invite researchers to contribute their original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and short communications addressing recent advances, challenges, and future directions in this field.
Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Tissue-based and synthetic biomaterials for valvular applications.
- Tissue-based and synthetic biomaterials for vascular graft applications.
- Materials to promote device endothelialization and/or reduce the potential for thrombosis.
- Materials to reduce calcification.
- Materials developed specifically in response to regulation changes that will limit the use of PFAS (and related) materials in future medical devices.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
