Dear colleagues,

For ever more questions and applications, new types of chemical compounds are required that have special functions. Everyone is talking about the antibiotic crisis caused by a lack of new antibiotics and increasing pressure from resistance in bacteria. What is often forgotten is the parallel crisis of a lack of fungicides for use in agriculture, which has comparable causes and seriously threatens our food and feed supplies. The big questions of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases are often unanswered from the therapeutic side, but new connections are also of enormous importance for engineering issues, which should not go unnoticed, also and especially with regard to resource- and climate-compliant development of products and processes.

It is well known that organic sulfur-containing compounds from the class of polysulfanes or thiosulfinates, such as those found in garlic, are chemically interesting and biologically versatile. Some undoubtedly offer the potential of an application in one or the other of the challenges mentioned, but it is often the significant smell that an application has so far not allowed. Both the need for effective substances and novel derivatives can open the door for the use of polysulfanes, thiosulfinates, and similar compounds in medicine, agriculture, and engineering.

Accordingly, I look forward to the submission of original papers and review articles, preferably with an interdisciplinary approach that illuminates the possibility of using these connections from various aspects.

Overweight and obesity have become global epidemics, especially during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The potential of medicinal plants as a better and safe option in treating obesity and overweight has gained attention in recent years. Obesity and overweight has become a major public health concern, and its incidence rising at an alarming rate. Obesity is one of the major types of metabolic syndrome, resulting in various types of problems such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and excess fat accumulation. The current searching was done by the keywords in main indexing systems including Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, the search engine of Google Scholar, and Institute for Scientific Web of Science. The keywords were traditional medicine, health benefits, pharmaceutical science, pomegranate, punicalin, punicalagin, and ellagitannins. Google Scholar was searched manually for possible missing manuscripts, and there was no language restriction in the search. This review was carried out to highlight the importance of medicinal plants which are common in traditional medicinal sciences of different countries, especially Asia to prevent and treatment of obesity and overweight during the global pandemic and the post-COVID-19 era.
