Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Flexible pavements face increasing technical, environmental, and economic challenges associated with cargo traffic density, climate change, and the need for more sustainable solutions for road and airport infrastructure systems. In this context, the development of next-generation materials, technologies, and design methodologies has become essential for improving pavement durability, resilience, and long-term performance while reducing environmental impacts.

This Special Issue aims to gather recent advances in conventional and innovative approaches for flexible pavements, with particular emphasis on sustainable materials, recycled resources, and performance-oriented engineering solutions. Topics of interest include pavement design, asphalt mixture design, durability and ageing, maintenance and rehabilitation strategies, and laboratory and field performance appraisal to support all novelties.

The Special Issue also welcomes contributions on reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAPs), industrial by-products, waste-derived materials, alternative binders, fibres, warm-mix technologies, and other environmentally friendly solutions in pavement engineering. Studies addressing pavement responses to traffic and climatic conditions, surface performance, rutting, cracking, fatigue, moisture damage, and life-cycle assessment are also encouraged.

Both experimental and numerical investigations, as well as case studies and practical engineering applications, are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
