Dear Colleagues,
Large Language Models (LLMs) have been established as transformative technologies that are reshaping artificial intelligence across academia, industry, and society. Beyond their foundational role in natural language processing, LLMs are being increasingly leveraged for autonomous reasoning, multi-modal understanding, specialized domain applications, and agentic systems through which planning, reasoning, and dynamic interaction with environments and tools can be achieved.
This Special Issue has been designed to showcase cutting-edge research on trends and prospects in LLMs, encompassing both theoretical advances and practical innovations. Contributions are welcomed that address emerging research frontiers, including, but not limited to, efficient model architectures and inference optimization for resource-constrained environments; prompt engineering, in-context learning, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques; hallucination detection and mitigation strategies; autonomous agents with tool use, multi-agent coordination, and agentic reasoning; knowledge distillation and model compression for edge deployment; multilingual and cross-lingual capabilities; multimodal integration with vision-language models; and interpretability frameworks through which transparent and trustworthy AI systems can be established.
Submissions on real-world applications are particularly encouraged, such as scientific discovery, software engineering, digital assistance, IoT data management, healthcare decision support, legal reasoning, and financial analysis. Both fundamental methodological contributions and case studies demonstrating practical value in applied sciences are welcome. By collecting high-quality, state-of-the-art research, this Special Issue is intended to provide the scientific community with a comprehensive view of the transformative potential, novel techniques, and intelligent solutions that will be shaped by the next generation of large language models and their societal impact.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
