This Special Issue on "Collaborative Intelligent Systems: Advances in Theory and Applications" aims to explore the fundamental principles, methodologies, and applications of intelligent systems in which multiple agents, models, sensors, or computational components collaborate to solve complex tasks. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, distributed computing, and large-scale data-driven modeling, collaborative intelligence has emerged as an important paradigm for building robust, adaptive, and scalable systems in real-world environments.
Collaborative intelligent systems focus on enabling effective interaction, information sharing, and joint optimization across heterogeneous entities, such as multi-agent systems, multi-modal learning models, distributed sensing networks, and human–AI collaborative frameworks. Such systems are particularly important in complex and uncertain scenarios where data may be incomplete, noisy, asynchronous, or distributed across different sources and platforms.
This Special Issue welcomes contributions that investigate theoretical foundations, learning algorithms, system frameworks, and real-world applications of collaborative intelligent systems. The scope of this Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- Artificial intelligence;
- Multi-agent systems;
- Distributed and federated learning;
- Collaborative perception and sensor fusion;
- Edge–cloud collaborative computing and intelligence;
- Reinforcement learning and coordination mechanisms;
- Large language model agents and agentic collaboration;
- Optimization and control in distributed intelligent systems;
- Real-world applications in robotics, autonomous driving, industrial systems, and environmental monitoring.
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit original research papers, technical contributions, and comprehensive review articles that present novel ideas, methodologies, and practical insights. This Special Issue aims to foster interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange, and to promote the development of innovative collaborative intelligent systems for both theoretical advancement and real-world impact.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
