Dear Colleagues,
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), driven primarily by atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), remains a leading cause of global mortality despite current intensive lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory therapies. This persistent residual vascular risk underscores the complex interplay between lipoprotein qualitative alterations, oxidative stress, and ongoing vascular inflammation. As such, oxidized phospholipids (oxPL) and dysfunctional lipoproteins—including modified LDL, Lp(a), dysfunctional HDL, and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) and their remnants—act as key mediators of endothelial damage, immunothrombosis, and plaque instability.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of novel pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical biomarkers, and innovative therapeutic strategies aimed at mitigating lipoprotein dysfunction and oxidative vascular damage. We invite original research articles and state-of-the-art reviews addressing, but not limited to:
- Vascular inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, platelet activation, and immunothrombosis in atherogenesis;
- Mechanisms linking oxPL, oxidative stress, and lipoprotein dysfunction to atherothrombosis;
- Novel biomarkers for residual cardiovascular risk assessment;
- Therapeutic interventions, including novel synthetic compounds, biological agents, and natural bioactives, that are targeting vascular redox state and lipid metabolism.
