Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and redox signaling from immune cells are fundamental to host defense against infectious pathogens. While controlled oxidative and immunological responses are vital for pathogen clearance, immune surveillance, and the initiation of adaptive immunity, dysregulated or prolonged responses are detrimental and contribute to tissue injury, immune dysfunction, and disease deterioration, as frequently observed in severe infections and exacerbations of chronic conditions.

Established immune cells’ transition from a protective “friend” to a pathogenic “foe” represents an unresolved challenge in infectious disease pathogenesis and does not simply reflect the persistence of immune cells or the sustained production of their cellular factors. Rather, in many instances, this transition may involve a shift in the functional state within the same cell type, such as cytokine-driven polarization, metabolic reprogramming, or epigenetic remodeling of macrophages. In other cases, it may result from the emergence of a distinct cell subset, exemplified by the development of immature suppressive PMN-MDSCs in sepsis. With recent technological advances, including single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and high-dimensional flow cytometry, dissecting redox-immune interactions systemically and within infected tissues at high resolution has also become increasingly feasible.

This Special Issue aims to showcase high-quality research that advances our understanding of oxidative stress-immune crosstalk and elucidate how this pathological axis can impact disease outcomes and inform novel therapeutic strategies. We invite researchers to submit original research articles and review articles covering, but not limited to, the following topics:

  1. Oxidative stress and redox signaling in innate and adaptive immune cells;
  2. Host–pathogen interactions in acute infections and chronic disease exacerbations;
  3. Omics and multi-omics approaches to studying immune responses during infections;
  4. Translational perspectives and novel therapeutic strategies targeting oxidative stress and immunological responses for infections.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
