Dear Colleagues,
Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and age-related retinal degeneration, are characterized by progressive neuronal loss and represent a major global health challenge. Increasing evidence indicates that oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the onset and progression of these diseases by promoting excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and cellular apoptosis. Consequently, the identification of effective antioxidant strategies has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach for neuroprotection.
Natural products have gained considerable attention due to their ability to modulate multiple molecular pathways involved in neuronal survival. Bioactive compounds derived from plants, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, crocins, and others, exhibit potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds can directly scavenge free radicals, enhance endogenous antioxidant defenses through activation of a variety of pathways, preserve mitochondrial function, and regulate cellular signaling mechanisms associated with inflammation and apoptosis.
The topic of this issue aims at exploring the antioxidant mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of natural products (either single molecules or synergistic actions of clearly defined chemical composition of selected batch) and to highlight their therapeutic potential in preventing or slowing neurodegenerative processes. Contributions addressing in vitro and in vivo studies, translational research, novel natural compounds, and innovative delivery strategies are particularly encouraged to advance the development of safe and effective neuroprotective interventions. In addition, a clear and reproducible chemical selection of different natural products paralled to their protective efficacy is highly reccomended.
