Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Reactive oxygen species are both indispensable regulators of sperm function and potent mediators of sperm damage. It is now well established that redox signalling underpins key physiological events, including capacitation, hyperactivation and fertilization, yet even subtle disturbances to this balance can initiate oxidative damage that compromises sperm function, genome integrity and reproductive outcomes. Understanding where the boundary lies between physiological and pathological oxidative stress remains a key challenge in reproductive biology.

This Special Issue of Antioxidants will bring together research exploring the dual roles of oxidative stress throughout the sperm lifespan: from environmental and systemic influences, through epididymal maturation and capacitation, to preservation of sperm function during storage, processing and fertilization. We welcome studies investigating the mechanisms that govern redox homeostasis, the origins and consequences of oxidative injury, biomarkers of oxidative status and targeted antioxidant approaches that preserve or enhance sperm function.

This Special Issue aims to advance a more nuanced understanding of sperm redox biology and foster the development of evidence-based strategies that improve sperm preservation, optimize assisted reproductive technologies and, ultimately, enhance male fertility.
