Dear Colleagues,
Oxidative stress is a central pathogenic factor in a wide range of ocular diseases, contributing to cellular dysfunction, inflammation, and progressive tissue degeneration. Due to its high metabolic activity and continuous exposure to light and environmental stressors, the eye is particularly susceptible to redox imbalance, making antioxidant defence mechanisms critical for the maintenance of visual homeostasis. This Special Issue aims to gather original research articles and comprehensive reviews that address the role of oxidative stress and antioxidant responses in major ocular disorders, including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and inflammatory eye diseases. Particular emphasis will be placed on genetic and epigenetic factors influencing oxidative stress susceptibility, as well as on emerging intercellular mechanisms such as redox signalling, extracellular vesicle-mediated communication, and interactions among retinal and non-retinal cell types. In addition, this Special Issue seeks to highlight innovative therapeutic strategies, ranging from conventional antioxidant approaches to targeted and novel interventions aimed at modulating redox pathways. By integrating insights from molecular genetics, cell biology, and translational research, this collection intends to provide an updated and comprehensive overview of redox-related mechanisms in ocular diseases and identify promising avenues for future therapeutic development.
