Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Crop protection has long been associated with a "pesticidal" action of active substances. In the Latin sense of the term (caedere), which means to kill pests, the toxicity and eco-toxicity of these substances has been criticized for decades. The emergence of new types of substances, i.e., those of "biocontrol agents", new modes of action that are not actually "biocidal", and new methods of application in fields have allowed and will continue to reduce the impact of pesticides on the environment and humans. Despite everything, these substances are reported to be less effective; supposedly, they are intended directly or indirectly to counter pests and any of these substances can have undesirable effects. It is this benefit/risk that must be reduced by acting on the two levers—danger and exposure. Certain initiatives on active substances, such as specific disposition in the USA as biopesticides or in Europe with low-risk substances and basic substances, contribute to reducing the general toxicity of plant protection products, reducing residues and, therefore, their negative impacts. Most of these new substances are compatible with organic farming plant protection restrictions, increasing the potential sales and market penetration. However, all these changes can only be effective if the pipeline of candidate substances is significant and regulatory obstacles are removed. Articles and reviews related to the above topics are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Agronomy is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
