Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Advances in functional genomics in farm animals rely on the availability of high-throughput omic technologies (transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics) and complex genomic data for all major farm animal species, enabling a better understanding of gene function and its impact on functional traits. This comprehensive approach enables the identification of functional genetic variants associated with animal health, productivity, sustainability, and robustness. The use of various methods accelerates genetic gain and efficiency in modern animal production. DNA and RNA sequencing, chromatin accessibility studies, methylation profiling, protein analysis, and high-density SNP markers contribute to the identification of structural and regulatory variants affecting gene expression. These methodological approaches accelerate the genetic improvement of breeding populations, as well as the productivity and reproductive capacity of animals. Research also focuses on lowering the environmental impact in all major farm animal species (cattle, pigs, chickens). Different data integration approaches allow better understanding of the genotype-phenotype relationship and help identify promising candidates for functional mutations. Finally, refined functional annotation of livestock genomes will provide important targets for genome editing to improve animal health, productivity, and sustainability.

This Special Issue aims to collect examples of good practice in application of different omics strategies for improvement of functional annotation of farm animal genomes. We especially support submissions revealing the mechanistic action of genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors and their mutual interactions on complex phenotypic traits in different farm animal species.
