Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue invites original research and reviews on the application of spectroscopy and imaging technologies in animal agriculture, including near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, Raman methods, infrared thermography and related optical approaches. These tools enable rapid, non-destructive, on-farm measurements that strengthen precision livestock farming—from on-site feed and nutrient evaluation (e.g., protein, fiber, moisture) to spatially resolved assessment of animal product quality, authenticity and safety in meat, milk and eggs.
We especially welcome submissions advancing animal health and welfare monitoring, where infrared thermography and complementary sensing can support early detection of welfare-relevant conditions such as mastitis, lameness and heat stress. Contributions emphasizing rigorous data analytics are encouraged, including calibration and validation strategies, chemometrics, multivariate statistics, uncertainty assessment, predictive modeling and AI/ML-based decision-support. Studies across livestock species (cattle, swine, poultry, etc.) are invited, from methodological developments and field trials to integrated IoT/precision-farming deployments that demonstrate impacts on sustainability, productivity and welfare.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Agriculture is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
