Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Rapid advances in artificial intelligence, automation, sensing, robotics, and digital decision-support are transforming animal husbandry from labor-intensive to intelligent, data-driven production. Livestock face increasing pressure to improve productivity, welfare, disease prevention, environmental sustainability, labor efficiency, and traceability while adapting to climate stress, resource limits, and rising demand for safe animal-source foods. Intelligent engineering technologies offer an opportunity to integrate real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, precision feeding, automated housing, behavior recognition, early disease detection, reproductive management, and farm-level decision support.
This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in intelligent animal husbandry technology, emphasizing AI-enabled sensing, automation, smart livestock facilities, precision health monitoring, and engineering solutions for sustainable animal production. We welcome original research articles, reviews, methods papers, case studies, and system-development studies addressing intelligent technologies for animal production, health, welfare, behavior, reproduction, housing, feeding, and farm management.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning for health, welfare, behavior, and productivity monitoring;
- Sensor-based systems, including wearable, RFID, imaging, thermal, acoustic, bioelectrical, and environmental sensors;
- Precision livestock farming, digital twins, decision-support, and farm management analytics;
- Robotics, automation, intelligent feeding, milking, housing, ventilation, and manure management;
- Computer vision and deep learning for behavior, disease detection, body condition, and welfare assessment;
- Smart disease surveillance, early-warning systems, biosecurity technologies, and antimicrobial-stewardship tools;
- Multimodal data fusion, explainable AI, edge computing, IoT, and cloud-based monitoring platforms;
- Technologies for sustainable animal production, climate resilience, and resource-use efficiency.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Agriculture is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
