Cover Story: This mixed methods study of 636 youth activists explores the positive and negative implications of activism for wellbeing. The survey findings reveal that although youth activists tend to report greater benefits from their activism than costs, the costs are related to worse health outcomes. A sense of belonging to an activist community serves as a significant protective factor for mental health, physical health, and flourishing. Focus group respondents clarify how peer support and a sense of belonging act as salves to burnout, the most common cost that youth activists report experiencing. Burnout stems from backlash in response to their efforts; pressure to be the savior generation; and the slow progress of change. Implications for youth activists and their supporters are discussed.
