Cover Story: Husbandry for zoo-housed species must enable the attainment of positive welfare states. Welfare outputs (i.e., positive moods and emotions) can only be achieved if the inputs (e.g., resources provided and environmental conditions) are species (and individual animal) appropriate. This article recommends “welfare-focussed husbandry” as a concept, using the giraffe as an example, which considers a species’ evolutionary history and behavioural ecology, as well as the wants and needs of individual animals themselves so husbandry can be fit for purpose. Appraising giraffe welfare around essential behavioural, dietary, climatic, and care needs provides a framework for zoos to evidence areas of good practice (that support positive welfare outputs) as well as identifying aspects of husbandry that will compromise welfare.
