Cover Story: Wine grape harvesting, especially for large farming areas, causes a physical strain on farmers. In order to solve this problem, in this study, we developed a 3-axis linear robot using a rack and pinion mechanism, which can be used in outdoor conditions at a low cost. Three brushless DC motors were controlled using a CAN bus to simplify the hardware system. The accuracy of the robot positioning was evaluated at the automated harvesting condition. The experiment results show that the accuracy contains a maximum error of around 9 mm. In order to improve accuracy, we constructed an error model for the robot and calibrated it accordingly. After calibration, the accuracy was improved to around 2 mm for all three axes. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the robot is high enough to facilitate the automated harvesting of wine grapes. View this paper
