Cover Story: Making transport more sustainable is one of the main objectives of international strategies. Planners are called to perform the hard task of satisfying the growing mobility needs of travelers. Then, new sustainable scenarios were promoted that need to be assessed to evaluate their effects on transport systems. Within these ex-ante assessment tools, path/route choice models play a key role, evaluating the routes chosen by users in relation to the perceived utility and consequently influencing the road network load. Thanks to telematics innovations, travelers’ path choices can be easily revealed and models can be developed to improve the simulation and forecasting of transport systems. In this context, the paper explores the opportunity offered by floating car data for setting up path choice models for both passenger and freight vehicles. View this paper
