Cover Story: Current health assessments often rely on expensive surveys, limiting their scope. This article explores the use of clinical data, which, due to the sheer size of the data and objective measures, provides an unparalleled view of the population’s health. We use data from the French National Hospital Discharge database to estimate the Disease-Free Life Expectancy (Dis-FLE) indicator. By analyzing the hospital trajectories of patients discharged from hospitals in France from 2010 to 2013, we provide a more comprehensive understanding of public health. These data reveal insights into age-dependent risk related to sex, alcohol abuse, tobacco consumption, obesity, and geographic location. View this paper
