Cover Story: District energy systems are of increasing importance in the transition towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The dynamic simulation of these systems is the topic of many scientific papers and several European Union projects. This paper presents the experiences, challenges and lessons learned from one case study on a dynamic simulator of a city-scale district heating system. It is shown that several questions remain unanswered with regard to modeling, computational performance and validation. Based on the case study, literature, and experiences from other projects, research gaps were identified, and future research directions are proposed. View this paper
