Cover Story: Obesity is a public health concern, often categorized by the inability to stop eating (i.e., loss of control over eating, a key feature of binge eating). Obesity treatments that address factors contributing to loss of control over eating are necessary. This study explores mindfulness (i.e., awareness/acceptance of current thoughts, feelings, and sensations) as a potential treatment by exploring the relationships between mindfulness, binge eating, and loss of control over eating in postmenopausal women with obesity. Participants who reported fewer binge-eating episodes were significantly more mindful than those who reported greater frequencies of binge eating. Moreover, overall mindfulness was significantly negatively correlated with markers of eating pathology. These findings suggest merit in investigating mindfulness-based therapies to treat binge eating in postmenopausal women with obesity. View this paper.
