Cover Story: The cow is considered one of the most important symbols of Hindu identity, often synonymous with nationalistic sentiment and pride. The issue of protecting and revering the cow has been the cause of much unrest, violence, and vigilantism. Indian law bans cow slaughter in most of the country, resulting in a large population of abandoned, unproductive cattle housed in cattle shelters. These often face inadequacy of space and infrastructure and require financial backing and veterinarian support. This review traces the 3000-year-old history of this unique phenomenon of nationwide animal protection and explores whether such strategies could find application in the Western milk-, meat-, and egg-production context.
