Cover Story: Over 120,000 people in the UK survive critical illness and are discharged home each year, with over 60% of these experiencing mobility issues and reduced health-related quality of life after being discharged home. The benefits of early mobility within the ICU have been highlighted and well researched since the introduction of guidelines for critical care rehabilitation in 2009. However, the patients’ experience of recovery and rehabilitation after being discharged home has received little attention. An understanding of the survivors’ experiences of physical recovery is essential to inform the development of patient-centred rehabilitation services and guidance. Accordingly, this qualitative systematic review, following the JBI methodology, explored critical care survivors’ perceptions, opinions, and experiences of physical recovery and physical rehabilitation following hospital discharge.
