Cover Story: What information is hidden in road connections when predicting COVID-19 transmission? How soon would the first case of COVID-19 appear for a particular suburb, and how severe could this suburb be? A novel road-network-based approach is employed to answer these questions. In a road network, nodes represent suburbs, and edges represent the roads between suburbs. Four centrality measures are considered, and degree centrality stands out, which is proved to be statistically significant in predicting COVID-19 vulnerability and severity. Closeness centrality is also substantial in assessing vulnerability, and so is eigenvector centrality in determining severity. This study closely looks at the Delta variant of COVID-19 and hopefully could also aid in highly infectious diseases in the future. View this paper.
