Cover Story: A fundamental feature underpinning phenomenological thermodynamics is that we accept limited knowledge and lack of control over all degrees of freedom of a system. However, modern quantum thermodynamics, which grows from information theory, requires the opposite. To bridge the two, we propose an intermediate route inspired by gauge theories known from fundamental physics, treating certain information content as the gauge. Consequently, we arrive at different notions of work and heat for quantum systems, consistent with the classical intuition. In particular, we exhibit heat present in closed quantum systems which we associate with energy that cannot be used to perform work due to insufficient control over the system. View this paper
