This review discusses recent advances in robotic surgery for urologic tumors, focusing on three key areas: robotic systems, assistive technologies, and artificial intelligence. The Da Vinci SP system has enhanced the minimally invasive nature of robotic surgeries, while the Senhance system offers advantages such as tactile feedback and eye-tracking capabilities. Technologies like 3D reconstruction combined with augmented reality and fluorescence imaging aid surgeons in precisely identifying the anatomical relationships between tumors and surrounding structures, improving surgical efficiency and outcomes. Additionally, the development of artificial intelligence lays the groundwork for automated robotics. As these technologies continue to evolve, we are entering an era of minimally invasive, precise, and intelligent robotic surgery. Full article

With the growing concern over climate change and energy security, the Government of India expedited enhancing the share of renewable energy (RE) derived from solar, wind and biomass sources within the energy blend. In this paper, a techno-economic and environmental analysis of a microgrid-integrated electric vehicle charging stations fueled by renewable energy is proposed for a typical area in the State of Karnataka, South India. The power transaction with the grid and the sell-back price to the national grid were investigated. Carbon emissions were also assessed, and 128,406 CO2 kg/Yr can be saved in the grid-connected mode. Also, in this work, different scenarios such as injecting active power, reactive power, and active and reactive power, and injecting active and absorbing reactive power to the grid are comprehensively assessed. Out of four types, type 3 (inject real and reactive power) provides significant reduction in power losses by up to 80.99%. The synchrophasor-technology-based monitoring method is adopted in order to enhance the microgrid system’s overall performance. The execution times for different cases with distributed generators (DGs) and electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) for conventional systems and micro-phasor measurement units (µPMU) were observed to be 19.07 s and 5.64 s, respectively, which is well accepted in the case of online monitoring. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Temporomandibular Joint and Aortic Root Score in Fibrillinopathies

Background and Objectives: Fibrillinopathies have different phenotypic expression: Marfan-like skeleton features, MLSF; mitral valve prolapse syndrome, MVPS; MASS phenotype, M = mitral valve prolapse, MVP, A = aortic root dilation, S = skeletal features, and the second S = (cutaneous) striae; Marfan Syndrome, MS. The study had the following main objectives: the correlation between disc displacement, DD (a major sign for temporomandibular joint dysfunction, TMDs) on magnetic resonance imaging, MRI, and aortic Z score (a major sign for aortic root dilation) on echocardiography; the predictive value of DD towards aortic Z score. DD had 2 types of severity: DD with reduction (the mild type, DDwR), and DD without reduction (the severe type, DDwoR). Materials and Methods: The type of fibrillinopathy was precised by clinical exam (systemic score), ophthalmic exam (for ectopia lentis), and echocardiography (aortic Z score, MVP). Medical treatment consisted of betablockers, BB (for patients with tachycardia), or angiotensin II receptor blockers, ARB. Surgical treatment was addressed to aortic root aneurysm, and severe mitral regurgitation, MR. DD benefited from dental conservatory treatment or surgical restoration. Results: DD-Z score had a powerful correlation in MASS (Rho = 0.787, p < 0.01), and in MS patients (Rho = 0.819, p < 0.01). For the entire sample, both DDwR-Z score and DDwoR-Z score had a moderate correlation (Rho = 0.469, and respectively 0.669). Furthermore, DD was an important predictor for Z score. DDwoR had a double power of prediction for the Z score compared with DDwR (B coefficient = 1.661 for DDwR and 3.281 for DDwoR). Conclusions: TMDs had a powerful correlation with aortic root dilation in MASS and MS patients from the sample. Likewise, TMDs was a major predictor for aortic root dilation, in the entire sample. In clinical practice, we can utilize an extracardiac finding, TMDs, obtained by a non-invasive technique, MRI, for cardiac severity stratification of fibrillinopathies. Full article

Background and Objectives: Adrenal insufficiency (AI) can be a significant concern in patients with transfusion-dependent homozygous beta thalassemia (bThal) due to the chronic disease burden and frequent blood transfusions that these patients require. The prevalence of AI in this population remains unclear, with studies often lacking control groups for comparison. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the proportion of patients with transfusion-dependent bThal who exhibit evidence of AI. Materials and Methods: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines identified 19 studies for analysis. Results: Despite the variability in the diagnostic methods used to ascertain AI, the meta-analysis revealed that approximately one-third of patients had evidence of AI, with the prevalence rising to 50% in studies focused on adults with bThal. Conclusions: These findings suggest an increased risk of AI in patients with bThal compared to the general population. Clinicians should consider tailored management strategies, including glucocorticoid coverage during surgical procedures, to mitigate the risk of adrenal crises in this vulnerable patient group. Further research is needed to optimize adrenal surveillance and management in patients with bThal. Full article

Background and Objectives: Diagnosis of myocarditis remains a challenge in clinical practice; however, magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) can ease the diagnostic approach by providing various parameters. The prevalence of right ventricular involvement in acute myocarditis is suggested to be more frequent than previously hypothesized. In this study, we sought to investigate subclinical RV involvement in patients with acute myocarditis and preserved RV ejection fraction (EF), using CMRI RV speckle-tracking imaging. Materials and Methods: CMRI of 27 patients with acute myocarditis (nine females, age 35.1 ± 12.2 y) was retrospectively analyzed. A control group consisting of CMRI images of 27 healthy individuals was included. Results: No significant differences were found regarding left ventricle (LV) and atrium dimensions. LV ejection fraction was significantly different between groups (56.6 ± 10.6 vs. 62.1 ± 2.6, p < 0.05). No significant differences were present between parameters used for conventional assessment of RV. However, RV strain absolute values were significantly lower in the acute myocarditis group in comparison with that of the control group (18.4 ± 5.4 vs. 21.8 ± 2.8, p = 0.018). Conclusions: Subclinical RV dysfunction detected by CMR-derived strain may be present in patients with acute myocarditis even with preserved RVEF. Full article

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the tibial tubercle–posterior intercondylar eminence (TT-IC) distance as a diagnostic tool and surgical guide for correcting extensor apparatus misalignment through tibial tubercle osteotomy. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with extensor apparatus misalignment. The TT-IC distance was measured using MRI. Patients underwent tibial tubercle osteotomy, guided by the TT-IC distance for correction. Post-operative outcomes, including alignment, pain scores, and functional recovery, were assessed. Results: A significant correlation was found between the TT-IC distance and the degree of extensor apparatus misalignment. Utilizing the TT-IC distance as a surgical guide led to improved alignment in majority of patients. Post-operative outcomes showed reduced pain and enhanced functional recovery. Conclusions: The study established the TT-IC measurement as a valuable tool for determining the need for tibial tuberosity osteotomy in patients with patellar instability, particularly those with trochlear dysplasia, by providing a more precise criterion than the traditional TT-TG distance. Background and Objectives: Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition that occurs in two phases: primary and secondary injury. These phases contribute to changes in blood vessels and the influx of inflammatory cells such as neutrophils and lymphocytes. The biomarker known as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been suggested as being highly valuable in predicting outcomes for patients with traumatic brain injury, acute ischemic stroke, and traumatic spinal cord injury. Therefore, this review study aims to investigate the prognostic value of the NLR in predicting outcomes for patients with SCI. Materials and Methods: A thorough review of relevant articles was conducted using Mesh keywords in Medline via Embase, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus from 2000 to 2023. The search was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist. After reviewing the articles and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, only relevant articles were included in the study. Results: In the initial search, 41 papers were identified. After applying exclusion criteria, only three clinical studies remained for review. It is still debatable whether the NLR can serve as a cost-effective, readily available, and independent predictive factor for both mortality and recovery outcomes in patients with traumatic spinal cord injuries. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that NLR, a readily available and inexpensive marker, can serve as an independent predictor of both mortality and recovery outcomes in patients with traumatic spinal cord injury. The article deals with the issue of teaching fire protection in elementary schools in the Czech Republic. The area of fire protection is one of the key areas that everyone should be familiar with and it is important to teach children how to prevent fires and how to face fires in case of danger. Thus, this article analyses the current approaches of elementary schools to teaching fire protection and compares the data obtained with approaches in teaching abroad. The obtained comparison is complemented by conducting a questionnaire survey, which underpins the current trends and possibilities of modernising the teaching itself. The results are presented in the form of graphs and the design of a potential application based on the presented mobile applications available on common mobile platforms. The conclusions of the study are summarised in the final chapter, which points to the need to expand fire protection education and the use of modern technologies. Full article

Building fires pose a critical threat to life and property. Therefore, accurate fire risk prediction is essential for effective building fire prevention and mitigation strategies. This study presents a novel approach to predicting fire risk in buildings by leveraging advanced machine learning techniques and integrating diverse datasets. Our proposed model incorporates a comprehensive range of 34 variables, including building attributes, land characteristics, and demographic information, to construct a robust risk assessment framework. We applied 16 distinct machine learning algorithms, integrating them into a stacking ensemble model to address the limitations of individual models and significantly improve the model’s predictive reliability. The ensemble model classifies fire risk into five distinct categories. Notably, although the highest-risk category comprises only 22% of buildings, it accounts for 54% of actual fires, highlighting the model’s practical value. This research advances fire risk prediction methodologies by offering stakeholders a powerful tool for informed decision-making in fire prevention, insurance assessments, and emergency response planning. The incorporation of Industry 4.0 has integrated various innovations into fire safety management, thus changing the mode of identifying, assessing, and controlling fire risks. This review aims at how emerging technologies like IoT, AI, cloud technology, and BIM are making changes to fire safety in structural structures. With IoT-enabled sensors, data, and analytics coupled with predictive algorithms for real-time scenarios, fire safety systems have become dynamic systems where early detection, quick response, and risk management can be achieved. In addition, cloud web-based solutions improve the storage of information while providing the predictive aspect for certainty of safety measures. This paper also largely focuses on such activities through the likes of ISO/IEC 30141 and IEEE 802.15.4, thus making a critical role in maintaining effective connectivity between IoT devices, which is necessary for the effective performance of fire safety systems. Furthermore, the implementation issues, including the high costs, the difficulty in scaling up the projects, and the cybersecurity concerns, are considered and compared to the possible solutions, which include upgrading in stages and the possibility of subsidies from the government. The review also points out areas for further study, such as the creation of small cell networks with lower latency, the use of AI to carry out the maintenance of IoTs, and the enhancement of protection mechanisms of systems that are based on the IoTs. In general, this paper highlights the vast possibilities offered by Industry 4.0 technologies to support organizational fire safety management or decrease fire fatalities and improve built environment fire safety. The rapid growth of the e-commerce market in the retail sector has led to a greater demand for home delivery services in recent years. In order to develop policies to address the issues related to delivery demand, it is critical to understand the demand mechanism of online shopping. Furthermore, the relationship between proximity to mass rapid transit and shopping mode choice mechanisms has not been studied, although, in the field of urban design, accessibility to mass rapid transit is known to affect travel behaviors. We focus on the relationship between proximity to mass rapid transit stations and the shopping mode choice mechanism and estimate structural equation models, considering in-person and online shopping propensities as the latent variables. We use the two datasets. One is from a web-based survey of online shoppers in Japan. The other is the 2019 NYC Citywide Mobility Survey data. The results based on Japanese survey data indicate a clear difference in shopping mode choice mechanisms between MRT-dependent neighborhoods and non-MRT-dependent neighborhoods, while such a difference is limited in NYC. Furthermore, the study reveals how individual and household characteristics and accessibility indicators affect online shopping propensity based on the type of neighborhood and city/country. Monitoring natural slopes, embankments, and unstable slopes is crucial to reducing predisposition to mass movements, especially in areas with geotechnical instability and high rainfall. This study proposes a methodology to identify geotechnical and pluviometric triggers of mass movements in railway slopes. It involves registering slopes and embankments along the railroad, recording accumulated rainfall indices, and documenting associated accidents. The experimental program included a cadastral survey at a pilot site on the MRS company’s railway network in the Paraopeba branch, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Surface and subsurface drainage conditions, anthropic interventions, and modifications affecting slope stability were also examined. Additionally, the history of accidents involving geotechnical and regional rainfall indices were incorporated to identify potential triggering events for mass movements. The study found a good correlation between landslide records and geotechnical risk mapping but a low correlation between landslide records and rainfall isohyets. The latter result is attributed to the low density and poor distribution of rainfall data and active pluviometers in the region. Overall, understanding the geological–geotechnical characteristics of slopes and the correlation between accidents and rainfall indices provides valuable insights for predicting potential landslide occurrences. As space missions proliferate and the payload requirements increase, the environmental impact of thrusters can no longer be considered negligible. Therefore, less impactful fuels such as methane are starting to be considered for launchers. In this paper we present a design case study for such a turbopump. Using both analytical models and Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques, we were able to reduce the size and weight of the turbopump assembly. Also, due to the elimination of some auxiliary systems, the overall efficiency was enhanced. This paper’s findings and methods can be transferred not only to launchers in its own class, but also to larger scale engines with a similar construction. Full article

This paper addresses semiotic elements of ritual in human encounter. The notion of an essential ritual presence in the existential/communicative connection of persons has been established in the work of Langer, Gadamer, and Jakobson. Yet, as Richard Lanigan maintains, vital aspects of Jakobson’s model of communication are typically missed in the application of his work, a consequence of which is that social science no longer differentiates between “communication” and “information”. As such, everything perceived as meaningful is reducible to “message”, and thus, effective communication means merely “finding the right message”. The regression to our current cybernetic world, along with the intellectual paradigms enabling it, was never a foregone conclusion, but the entrenchment of social science in information theory makes it clear that an epistemological commitment to a semiotic phenomenology of communicative existence—and the visibility of ritual life—may well be our only way out. Hāpuku (Polyprion oxygeneios) is a promising candidate for aquaculture production in New Zealand. Methods for spawning, juvenile production, and growout to harvest entirely on land, where water quality, pathogens, environmental impacts, and genetic “pollution” can be tightly controlled, have been developed, and genetic improvement to optimise land-based production is the obvious next step. However, estimates of genetic parameters are required to design a rigorous, disciplined, and effective selective breeding program. By using existing data consisting of irregularly spaced repeated measurements of fork length and live body weight collected on wild-collected founders and two generations of captively reared progeny, we evaluated the species’ genetic potential for improvement in growth. We first tested a range of univariate random regression models to identify the best-fitting models for these data. Subsequently, using a bivariate model, we estimated variance components for growth trajectories of fork length and whole body weight. With one to six records available per fish, the best-fitting univariate models included only a fixed effect for contemporary groups and fixed and random genetic third-order Legendre polynomials. More complex models that included full-sib family and/or permanent environmental effects produced unacceptable constrained and/or non-positive-definite solutions. Both traits are moderately heritable at all stages of the growout phase (~0.4–0.5), and the genetic correlation patterns between daily breeding values estimated via the covariance function are different for length and weight. Genetic correlations for length between all pairs of age-specific breeding values are positive and strong (>0.7) and change gradually and smoothly with increasing temporal separation. For weight, these correlations deteriorate more rapidly with increasing time lags between measurements and become negative for some age pairings. We conclude that random regression analyses are a valuable tool for extracting genetic information from irregularly spaced repeated measurements of fish size, speculate that emerging technologies for high-throughput genotyping and phenotyping will add to the value of this approach in the near future, and reason that a breeding strategy that rigorously takes into account the potentially unfavourable genetic correlations between breeding values for weight at some ages will further adapt hāpuku to land-based systems and enhance the profitability commercial-scale production. The traditional methods for predicting the distribution of albacore (Thunnus alalunga) fishing grounds have low performance and accuracy. Uneven sampling can result in unreasonable evaluation indicators. To address these issues, three methods, equi-frequency, K-means clustering algorithm, and 1-R split, were applied to discretize the catch per unit effort (CPUE) of albacore in the South Pacific from 2016 to 2021 and partition the fishing grounds into abundance levels. Eight machine learning models were used to predict the fishing grounds. In addition to the traditional evaluation index based on confusion matrix, top-k index was also used to evaluate the accuracy of fishery abundance predictions. The results showed that (1) When sampling is unbalanced, the reported accuracy does not fully represent the actual performance of the model in predicting the abundance of albacore in the fishing ground. F1 value can be used as the index of the model effect and stability. (2) In binary classification, the quartile stacking algorithm has the best stacking performance, with F1 0.89. (3) The top-1 prediction accuracy of three-category fishery forecasting is the highest at 0.74, and the top-1 prediction accuracy of five-category fishery forecasting is the highest at 0.54. (4) The top-k accuracy of classification of fisheries with multiple abundance using K-means is significantly better than that of equal frequency discretization (p < 0.001). The top-k evaluation index was used to predict the fishing grounds of albacore across multiple abundance levels for the first time in this study, which is significant for pioneering a new method for this application and which provides a demonstration of the development of artificial intelligence techniques for fisheries in the future. Microalgae are promising as prebiotics in aquaculture. Arthrospira maxima has potential nutritional value but is poorly studied. We assessed A. maxima feed supplementation in tilapia fry and evaluated its effect on growth performance and gut microbiota. Fish were cultivated in ponds under 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% A. maxima inclusion treatments. Growth parameters and biomass proximate analysis were assessed. A meta-amplicon analysis was performed on the gut microbiota using DADA2 and PICRUST2 for functional prediction. Among treatments, the 5% supplementation group seemed to present no negative effect on growth parameters and did not compromise the nutritional quality of tilapia fry biomass. Microbial composition was characterized by Cetobacterium, Pseudomonas and Aeromonas genera, and a predominance of beneficial metabolic pathways. Microbiota of tilapia fry fed with A. maxima showed unique genera with reported beneficial functions in tilapia. The abundance of potential pathogenic taxa was significantly decreased in supplementation treatments, possibly related to valuable compounds of A. maxima. The inclusion of the microalgae supported the stability of the microbiota, favoring the growth of commensal species. This seems to have an effect on decreasing the presence of pathogenic genera in the gastrointestinal tract. Overall, our work proposes 5% feed inclusion of A. maxima to be the most suitable for tilapia fry aquaculture to maintain production rates while improving general health. Full article

True morels (Morchella spp.) are highly valuable and medicinal mushrooms. Saprophytic morels have been cultivated, especially in China and some Western countries, over the last few decades. Türkiye has a rich potential in terms of wild morel diversity, with nearly 40 Morchella species in its genetic pool, though only 22 of these have been identified molecularly. It has high economic value worldwide, and Türkiye exports morels worth approximately 2 million $ annually. There is also significant interest in morel mushroom cultivation in Türkiye. In this study, 40 Morchella strains were collected and isolated from different regions of Türkiye and analyzed based on the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) region. A phylogenetic dendrogram was drawn. The isolates of M. importuna, M. exima, M. exuberans, M. dunali, M. tridentina, M. crassipes, and M. esculenta were identified based on the ITS rDNA region. However, the identification of isolates 849-Kg027 and 966-Kg142 could not be determined clearly, and the isolates of M. vulgarius and M. spongiola were not distinct based on the ITS analysis. The macro-morphological features of the mycelia were investigated. Mycelia colors ranged from off-white to pale gray in the juvenile stage, orange to pale brown during early pigmentation, and pale brown to dark brown in the senescence stage. M. crassipes, M. exuberans, and 966-Kg142 formed lighter-colored mycelia, whereas M. dunali and M. vulgarius exhibited the darkest mycelial pigments. Sclerotia formation was compact, pale yellow to yellow, and abundant. In conclusion, molecular identification of Turkish morel cultures was performed, and cultural characteristics along with morphological differences were examined. The cultures have been deposited for further study in the Mushroom Gene Bank at the Atatürk Central Horticultural Research Institute. Full article

Cultural identity and participation play a critical role in understanding culture and its influence on different cultural groups. The Carpatho-Rusyns originate in the Carpathian Rus, which is in the Carpathian Mountains. The Carpatho-Rusyns are a stateless group, and many historically immigrated to other countries. This mixed-method study examines cultural participation and identity among Carpatho-Rusyn descendants (n = 51). Data collection comprised both open-ended and closed-ended survey questions. A link to the survey was shared in Facebook groups that relate to Carpatho-Rusyn culture, genealogy, and history. Closed-ended survey items were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while open-ended items were thematically coded. The findings indicate that most participants do not align with particular Carpatho-Rusyn groups, yet many still uphold cultural traditions, especially related to food and holidays. Qualitative insights emphasize the significance of cultural pride and distinction. Ultimately, this study highlights unique facets of Carpatho-Rusyn heritage and its lasting importance for descendants living in various countries, especially the United States. Finally, this paper concludes with practical implications that center on the importance of developing educational programs, community engagement strategies, and cultural awareness initiatives to preserve and promote the culture. Background: In the research of coronary artery disease, the precise initial injury that starts the atherosclerotic cascade remains unidentified. Moreover, the mechanisms governing the progression or regression of coronary plaque are not yet fully understood. Based on the concept that the cardiovascular system is a network of pumps and pipes, could fluid mechanics principles and practices elucidate the question of atherosclerosis using flow dynamics images from a novel angiographic technique, focusing on antegrade and retrograde flows and their collisions in iliac and coronary arteries? Methods: From January 2023 to May 2024, coronary angiograms of all hemodynamically stable patients with stable or unstable angina were screened. The angiograms displaying either no lesions (normal) or mild-to-moderate lesions were selected. Each patient underwent an evaluation of flow dynamics and arterial phenomena in both iliac and right coronary arteries. For each artery, data were categorized based on the following parameters: laminar versus non-laminar flow, presence versus absence of collisions, and presence versus absence of retrograde flow. Additionally, in two sub-studies, we analyzed the relationship between retrograde flow and blood pressure, and artificial intelligence algorithms were used to detect the retrograde flow in the right coronary artery. Results: A total of 95 patients were screened, and 51 were included in this study. The results comprised quantitative data (prevalence of laminar flows, collisions, and retrograde flows) and qualitative data (morphological characteristics of antegrade laminar flow, retrograde contrast flow, and instances of flow collision). The results showed that in the iliac artery, laminar flow was observed in 47.06% (24/51) of cases, with collisions noted in 23.53% (12/51). Retrograde flow was present in 47.06% (24/51) of cases, and notably, 75% (18/24) of these cases were associated with uncontrolled diastolic blood pressure (DBP) above 80 mmHg (p < 0.001). Conversely, in the RCA, laminar flow was observed in 54.9% (28/51) of cases, with collisions noted in only 3.92% (2/51). Retrograde flow was identified in 7.84% (4/51) of cases, and all these cases (100%, 4/4) were associated with uncontrolled systolic blood pressure (SBP) above 120 mmHg, though statistical significance was not reached due to the small sample size (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Based on the concept that the cardiovascular system is a network of pumps and pipes, this research methodology provides intriguing insights into arterial flow behaviors by integrating fluid mechanics practices with novel angiographic observations. The preliminary results of this study identified laminar flow as the predominant pattern, with retrograde flow and collisions occurring infrequently. The implications of vortex, collision, and disorganized flow highlight potential mechanisms for endothelial damage and atherosclerosis initiation. Moreover, the correlation with blood pressure underscores the critical role of hypertension management in preventing adverse hemodynamic events. Future directions include refining imaging techniques and further exploring the mechanistic links between flow dynamics and vascular pathophysiology to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases. Genetic and Phylogenetic Analysis of Feline Coronavirus in Guangxi Province of China from 2021 to 2024

Feline coronavirus (FCoV), as one of the important pathogens of feline viral gastroenteritis, has been attracting great attention. A total of 1869 rectal and nasal swabs, feces, and ascites samples were collected from eight regions in Guangxi province during 2021–2024. The multiplex RT-qPCR established in our laboratory was used to test these samples for FCoV, and 17.66% (330/1869) of the samples were positive for FCoV. The S, M, and N genes of 63 FCoV-positive samples were amplified and sequenced, and the genetic and evolutionary characteristics were analyzed. Similarity analysis showed that the nucleotide and amino acid homologies of S, M, and N genes were 81.2–99.6% and 70.2–99.5%, 89.9–100% and 91.6–100%, and 90.1–100% and 91.5–100%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all 63 FCoV strains, based on S gene sequences, belonged to type I FCoV (FCoV-I), and were clustered with Chinese strains and the Netherlands UU strains. Recombinant signals were detected in the S gene of strains GXLZ03-2022, GXLZ08-2022, and CCoV GD/2020/X9. The results suggest that FCoV is still prevalent in the Guangxi province of southern China, and the prevalent FCoV strains show high genetic diversity and novel epidemic characteristics. Full article

Urban Flood Vulnerability Assessment in Freetown, Sierra Leone: AHP Approach

This study presents a comprehensive flood vulnerability assessment for Freetown, Sierra Leone, spanning the period from 2001 to 2022. The objective of this research was to assess the temporal and spatial changes in the flood vulnerability using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and AHP-based Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) analysis. This study identified the flood-vulnerable zones (FVZs) by integrating critical factors such as the rainfall, NDVI, elevation, slope, drainage density, TWI, distance to road, distance to river, and LULC. The analysis reveals that approximately 60% of the study area is classified as having medium to high vulnerability, with a significant 20% increase in the flood risk observed over the past two decades. In 2001, very-high-vulnerability zones covered about 68.84 km2 (10% of the total area), with high-vulnerability areas encompassing 137.68 km2 (20%). By 2020, very-high-vulnerability zones remained constant at 68.84 km2 (10%), while high-vulnerability areas decreased to 103.26 km2 (15%), and medium-vulnerability zones expanded from 206.51 km2 (30%) in 2001 to 240.93 km2 (35%). The AHP model-derived weights reflect the varied significance of the flood-inducing factors, with rainfall (0.27) being the most critical and elevation (0.04) being the least. A consistency ratio (CR) of 0.068 (< 0.1) confirms the reliability of these weights. The spatial–temporal analysis highlights the east and southeast regions of Freetown as consistently vulnerable over the years, while infrastructure improvements in other areas have contributed to a general decrease in very-high-vulnerability zones. This research highlights the urgent need for resilient urban planning and targeted interventions to mitigate future flood impacts, offering clear insights into the natural and human-induced drivers of the flood risk for effective hazard mitigation and sustainable urban development. (1) Background: Ultrasound attenuation imaging (ATI) is an innovative technique that allows for the evaluation of the degree of lipid infiltration of the liver parenchyma in a simple and non-invasive way. The objective of this study was to verify the applicability of the ATI method in the evaluation of hyperlipidemia. (2) Methods: This study included 53 dogs between January 2021 and December 2022, of which 21 were healthy (A) and 32 had hyperlipidemia (B). The dogs of Group B were divided into mild hyperlipidemic (B1; n = 15) and moderate/severe hyperlipidemic (B2; n = 17). Each dog underwent biochemical examination, B-mode ultrasound and ATI investigation at the liver level via a right intercostal approach. (3) Results: The mean AC value was significantly higher in Group B (0.95 ± 0.23 dB/cm/MHz) compared to Group A (0.81 ± 0.10 dB/cm/MHz). No statistically significant differences were highlighted regarding the ATI values between the subjects with mild and moderate/severe hyperlipidemia. (4) Conclusion: ATI could be a promising method for the non-invasive evaluation of hepatic steatosis in veterinary medicine. Full article

Non-Linear Relationship between MiRNA Regulatory Activity and Binding Site Counts on Target mRNAs

MicroRNAs (miRNA) exert regulatory actions via base pairing with their binding sites on target mRNAs. Cooperative binding, i.e., synergism, among binding sites on an mRNA is biochemically well characterized. We studied whether this synergism is reflected in the global relationship between miRNA-mediated regulatory activity and miRNA binding site count on the target mRNAs, i.e., leading to a non-linear relationship between the two. Recently, using our own and public datasets, we have enquired into miRNA regulatory actions: first, we analyzed the power-law distribution pattern of miRNA binding sites; second, we found that, strikingly, mRNAs for core miRNA regulatory apparatus proteins have extraordinarily high binding site counts, forming self-feedback-control loops; third, we revealed that tumor suppressor mRNAs generally have more sites than oncogene mRNAs; and fourth, we characterized enrichment of miRNA-targeted mRNAs in translationally less active polysomes relative to more active polysomes. In these four studies, we qualitatively observed obvious positive correlation between the extent to which an mRNA is miRNA-regulated and its binding site count. This paper summarizes the datasets used. We also quantitatively analyzed the correlation by comparative linear and non-linear regression analyses. Non-linear relationships, i.e., accelerating rise of regulatory activity as binding site count increases, fit the data much better, conceivably a transcriptome-level reflection of cooperative binding among miRNA binding sites on a target mRNA. This observation is potentially a guide for integrative quantitative modeling of the miRNA regulatory system. Full article
