Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Microbial biotechnology is a cornerstone of sustainable development, driving transformative solutions across health, agriculture, energy, and environmental sectors. In China, this field has experienced extraordinary momentum, with the country ranking first in publication output within our journal’s biotechnology section. Most leading institutions have been at the forefront of these advances, demonstrating exceptional research capacity and global influence. This Special Issue, “State-of-the-Art Microbial Biotechnology in China (2026, 2027)”, aims to highlight recent breakthroughs and innovative strategies developed by Chinese research groups. Special emphasis will be placed on emerging and high-impact areas such as extremophile applications, synthetic biology, bioprocess and bioreactor engineering, industrial microbiology, bioresource utilization, biofuels and bioproducts, environmental sustainability, and bioremediation coupled with waste recycling. We welcome contributions on microbial production of bioresources, agents, bioproducts, biofuels, agricultural feed, pharmaceuticals, and sustainable agricultural inputs, as well as studies on microbial interactions, novel bioprocesses, and the integration of artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and advanced bioreactor design. This Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the current landscape and future trajectories of microbial biotechnology in China, showcasing the nation’s pivotal role in shaping a resilient and sustainable bioeconomy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
