During China’s social transformation, the spiritual life of young people exhibits a dual tendency toward secularisation and consumerization. While traditional institutional religion continues to wane, a consumption-based religiosity has surfaced, marking a shift from collective, class-based subcultural expressions to post-subcultural practices centred on individual affect, meaning bricolage, and fluid identities. Through a comparative analysis of historical Real Person Fiction and Yonghe Temple bracelets, this study reveals how contemporary youth transform historical memory and religious symbols into flexible cultural resources. Crucially, this transformation is not a wholesale rupture with tradition but rather a selective appropriation and recontextualization of religious concepts inherited through family upbringing and folk customs. Their practices thus embody a dialectic of discontinuity and continuity: what is discontinued is institutional allegiance to prescribed rituals; what continues is the deep-seated impulse to seek meaning through symbolic practices. The research finds that young people construct temporary scene-based tribes through emotional identification and symbolic consumption, using fluidity and multiplicity to counter anxieties in daily life. Compared to traditional communities, such tribes offer individuals meanings that are more personalised and immediate, reflecting the lifestyles individuals wish to cultivate. Within a context of high uncertainty, they convey fragmented responses to the predicaments of modernity through the reinterpretation and re-narration of historical and sacred symbols. Full article

Background: About 40% of patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) are left untreated. Identification of the modifiable factors for opting out could increase the number eligible for treatment. Methods: We first assessed the completeness of registration. Next, we identified patients residing in the North Denmark Region, included 2023/24 in the Danish Pancreas Cancer Database (DPCD), registered as “no treatment”. We supplemented register data with health record data, including reasons for opting out of treatment. Results: Registration in DPCD was complete compared to the National Clinical Cancer Database, except for one patient. Six patients had other tumors. Of a total of 91 patients, 79% were >75 years old, 2/3 were in performance status (PS) > 2, more than half were socially or physically fragile, while 42% had significant comorbidity. Only 20% were referred to an oncologist. The median overall survival was 2 months, and the 1-year survival was 6%. Clinical stage and PS were prognostic in multivariable analysis. In 70%, poor PS was a reason for opting out of treatment, while 11% declined treatment without objective reasons. Conclusions: Poor PS, frailty, or patients’ wishes explained 89% opting out of treatment. On a patient level, modifiable factors seem limited in this population. Full article

With the rapid development of the sharing economy and the progress of social ecological civilization, social media influencers (SMIs) have garnered significant from academia and practitioners for their pivotal role in fostering pro-environmental behavioral intentions within the tourism consumption context. Drawing on the two-step flow theory, social influence theory, and social learning theory, this study establishes an integrated analytical framework to elucidate how SMIs facilitate the balance between tourism development and ecosystem preservation by activating pro-environmental behavioral behavior. This study conceptualizes the SMIs’ multi-traits as a higher-order construct (a third-order reflective structure), which integrates content-determined and personality-determined attributes, viewing SMIs’ effectiveness as a coherent system of influence rather than a series of fragmented traits. Based on survey data collected from 598 Chinese social media users, the study utilized Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM) to test the proposed model. The results demonstrate that SMIs’ multi-traits exert significant positive effects on parasocial relationships and wishful identification, which in turn enhance individuals’ willingness to mimic. This willingness to mimic serves as a core behavioral conversion mechanism, bridging digital influence on three pro-environmental behavioral intentions: general, specific and online advocacy intentions. Furthermore, robustness analyses reveal marked heterogeneity across education- and income-based groups, indicating that the efficacy of SMI traits and the psychological-to-behavioral conversion efficiency are contingent upon the recipients’ socioeconomic resources and cognitive capital. Overall, this study characterizes social media influencer marketing as a scalable, socially driven phenomenon that can effectively activate and promote pro-environmental behavioral intentions, providing valuable insights for environmental education and sustainable tourism development in the digital age. The implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in logistics has the ability to transform the whole logistics industry by improving business models, operational efficiency, traceability, security, and customer experience. The manual logistics process causing a lot of late deliveries, wrong deliveries, and line stoppages in a multinational automotive company. That led to the pursuit of this research work to convert the manual call-off process to a fully system-controlled process. The main objective of this research was to implement system-controlled warehouse call-offs and scheduling processes to reduce line stoppages caused by late and incorrect delivery of parts to the line, as well as hot call-offs, and to improve the overall efficiency of line supply routes. The introduction of IoT in the warehouse comes with a takted process, meaning that each step of the line supply process is timed. The process introduces scanners to support process confirmation and link every process step to System Applications and Products in Data Processing (SAP) to allow for traceability. The interconnected devices and system in this study connect line-side reality (using Rapid Frequency Identification (RFID), optic sensors, and the Integrated Production System Logistics (IPSL) bill of material information) with the SAP demand and part requirements. The IoT implementation results show a great improvement in the overall logistics of line supply processes. A decrease in line stoppages is witnessed, with a reduction of 69%, and line-side confirmation makes tracing easier, thereby enhancing process transparency. The addition of scanners provides line supply employees transparency with respect to where parts are going, further reducing the probability of wrong deliveries. Waste reduction is also a result of this research, as the takted processes allow for time saving on the round-trip time, which is reduced by 32%. Conclusively, this research adds to the expanding corpus of research on the application of IoT in logistics and offers useful advice to policymakers and logistics managers who wish to integrate IoT technologies into their operations. Congenital hearing loss, frequently resulting from defective hair cells, remains poorly understood due to the incomplete identification of key pathogenic genes. Oncomodulin (OCM) is a kind of calcium-binding protein (CaBP) that regulates diverse cellular processes and is thought to play crucial roles in auditory function. In teleost fish, parvalbumin 8 (pvalb8) and parvalbumin 9 (pvalb9) belong to the oncomodulin lineage and are highly expressed in hair cells. In this study, we first reported the oncomodulin lineage function in fish and identified pvalb8 as an essential regulator of hair cell development. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH) revealed that pvalb8 is highly and specifically expressed in supporting cells and hair cells. Functional loss of pvalb8, achieved via CRISPR/Cas9 knockout or morpholino knockdown, resulted in reduced neuromast size and a significant decrease in neuromast hair cell number, leading to auditory behavioral deficits. In addition, pvalb9 mutants exhibited hair cell defects similar to those observed in pvalb8 mutants, including a significant reduction in hair cell number. Moreover, pvalb8 loss strongly inhibited the proliferation of supporting cells, which likely accounts for the reduced number of differentiated hair cells. The expression levels of Wnt target genes, axin2, ccnd1, and myca, were all significantly reduced in pvalb8 mutants compared to control zebrafish, while activation of the Wnt signaling pathway rescued the hair cell loss observed in pvalb8 mutants, indicating that pvalb8 promotes hair cell development via Wnt-dependent proliferative signaling. These findings highlight pvalb8 as a critical factor in the regulation of auditory hair cell formation and function in zebrafish, offering new insights into the role of oncomodulin lineage in sensory cell development. This review covers issues related to the characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). It discusses traditional methods of treating colorectal cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, as well as modern approaches, including targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and innovative gene therapy strategies. Particular attention is paid to the identification of molecular subtypes of CRC, which has revolutionized treatment in advanced stages of the disease and contributed to improved patient survival. The role of biomarkers, including liquid biopsy, in diagnosis, therapy monitoring, and treatment response assessment is emphasized. The potential of artificial intelligence in planning and optimizing surgical procedures is also discussed, opening up new possibilities in personalized therapy. This article provides up-to-date knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of CRC, diagnostic prospects, and directions for the development of precision therapies, serving as a valuable source of information for both clinicians involved in the treatment of CRC and patients wishing to deepen their knowledge of the disease and modern therapeutic options. YouTube is the most popular social media platform for children and adolescents, yet relatively little research has been conducted on adolescents’ use and their motivations for use. Prior research has predominantly focused on measuring the quantity of time spent on the platform, and less is known about the motivations and self-awareness of using YouTube as children turn into tweens and teens. Stemming from a larger survey study of adolescent social technology use, we interviewed a subset of 35 youths (50% female, 49% male, 1% non-binary) to qualitatively explore the benefits and challenges of YouTube use. Thematic analyses revealed the wide range of emotional responses and regulation that were attributed to YouTube use, including humor, fear, anger, insecurity, and anxiety. Some participants experienced wishful identification with YouTube influencers, and others viewed YouTube as entertainment or an escape from boredom. Sleep regulation was mixed, in that for some, YouTube was a distraction from getting enough sleep, and for others, it helped them fall asleep. Parental monitoring was a developmental challenge as the youths described their parents as lacking knowledge about the length of time they spend on the platform and/or the risky YouTube content that they watch, particularly as they got older. These exploratory findings may be pertinent for parents, educators, and clinicians. Full article

Pregnancy is a period of great complexity and potential psychological vulnerability which may increase in unfavorable conditions, such as hospitalization. Therefore, early identification of emotional, anxious, or depressive difficulties is important in terms of maternal and fetal well-being. International guidelines recommend the use of brief screening tools to identify perinatal women for further investigation, but which of the measures is optimal remains to be clarified. The objective of this study was to compare the Whooley depression questions used together with the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2), versus the Matthey Generic Mood Questionnaire (MGMQ), to evaluate their concordance in screening results and their clinical usefulness in the hospital setting. Hospitalized pregnant women, numbering 228, and 55 male partners completed both questionnaires. The women’s results showed high similar screen positive rates on both measures, but the screen positive concordance between the two instruments was low (around 50%). The Whooley/GAD-2 missed a significant percentage of women who, on the MGMQ, wished to talk with a professional, or who expressed moderate to high distress. The data from male partners were too few to be interpretable. Findings suggest that screening is important in hospitalized women, and clinicians should consider the respective merits and possible weaknesses of different screening tools. Full article

Background: The Go Wish Game (GWG) is a card game designed to ease Advance Care Planning (ACP) discussions. It helps patients to consider their values and priorities, and to share them with families and healthcare professionals (HPs). Despite a general appreciation of the GWG, mechanisms related to its implementation have been poorly investigated. Objective: to determine optimal strategies for integration of the GWG into clinical practice and to investigate the experiences of a Palliative Care Unit (PCU) trained in the use of the GWG. Methods: We performed a descriptive qualitative study. Data were collected through a focus group (FG) and we followed the thematic analysis. The PCU’s team described their experience using the GWG focusing on 15 patients (9 oncological, 6 non-oncological) patients, managed by the PCU. Results: Our data revealed five main themes, along with their subthemes: (1) personalizing the GWG proposal; (2) the role of the caregiver; (3) organizational aspects; (4) meaning of the GWG in clinical practice, and (5) dealing with patient’s priorities. Comparison of real-life cases has led to the identification of specific facilitators and barriers that can hinder or promote the use of the GWG for personalized medicine. Conclusions: Findings suggest that certain aspects still require attention in GWG implementation, particularly regarding the training and competencies (communicative, relational, ethical) of the healthcare professionals, and the process leading to the proposal of the GWG to the patient. Background: Analyzing Y-chromosome short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) is essential in forensic genetics and population studies. The Yfiler™ Plus kit, which includes 27 Y-STR markers, enhances the discrimination power for forensic and kinship applications. However, this genetic system has not been analyzed in Mexican populations, which limits its application and representativeness in international databases. Objectives: We wished to examine the genetic diversity and forensic parameters of the 27 Y-STRs included in the YFiler™ Plus kit in two populations from Western Mexico (Jalisco and Michoacán). Methods: Male DNA samples were amplified using the Yfiler™ Plus kit, followed by a fragment analysis via capillary electrophoresis (CE). The haplotype frequencies and forensic parameters were calculated. The haplogroups of all samples were predicted, and the distribution and percentages of ancestries were determined. The Rst genetic distances, including reference populations, were calculated and graphically represented in a multidimensional scaling (MDS) plot. Results: A total of 224 haplotypes were identified in all of the samples, of which 98.66% corresponded to unique haplotypes. Bi- and tri-allelic patterns were observed in both populations. The observed discriminatory capacity was 98.4% for Jalisco and 98.9% for Michoacán, while the haplotype diversity values were 0.9998 and 0.9997, respectively. The most frequent haplogroup was R1b, followed by Q, representing the European and Native American ancestries, in both populations. Conclusions: This study is the first to report the haplotype diversity and forensic parameters of the 27 Y-STRs included in the Yfiler™ Plus kit in Mexican populations. These findings confirm the forensic utility of these markers for human identification, biological relationship testing, and criminal investigations, reinforcing their applicability in forensic casework. Confusion between the means and ends, specifically between technological achievements and their users, has been evident in taxonomy’s history since the end of the last century. Following a current of thought implicit in Anglo-Saxon culture, this trend aligns with the idea of inevitability. It is inevitable, so it is thought, that what a human organism can do, a machine will be able to do at some point in time. This will ultimately lead to dispensing with the human element for things they do not wish to do themselves. Despite certain misunderstandings about what has become known as the Turing Test, the general idea is to determine whether a machine can analyze data as meaningfully as a human does and make decisions based on that analysis. In the case of taxonomy, the initial aim of using machines was to efficiently replace a researcher for identification purposes. The situation later evolved to include the discovery of new entities in addition to identification. In this essay, I provide a brief overview of some milestones along this trajectory and its current state and discuss the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in taxonomy. Full article

Traditionally, it has been considered that the Ptolemaic or classical maps from the four editions of Ptolemy’s Geography published in Rome (1478, 1490, 1507, and 1508) are apparently indistinguishable at first glance because they have been printed from the same plates. This poses a problem for antiquarians, collectors, and curators who wish to accurately date their copies. Recently, two very comprehensive articles have been published on the different paper watermarks associated with each edition, which would allow for the correct identification of each one. However, there are occasions when the maps do not display watermarks. This article aims to provide some keys to distinguish between the incunabula editions (1478, 1490) and those of 1507–1508 in cases of the absence of watermarks. In this process of detecting differences, we have used digitized images of the maps. The results show small modifications in the copper plates made between the editions of 1490 and 1507/08. Our findings reveal that seven previously unknown reworked maps have been identified. Full article

Introduction: Hairy-cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare B-cell chronic lymphoproliferative disorder (B-CLPD), whose favorable prognosis has changed with the use of purine nucleoside analogs (PNAs), such as cladribine (CDA) or pentostatin (P). However, some patients eventually relapse and over time HCL becomes resistant to chemotherapy. Many discoveries have been made in the pathophysiology of HCL during the last decade, especially in genomics, with the identification of the BRAFV600E mutation and cellular biology, including the importance of signaling pathways as well as tumor microenvironment. All of these new developments led to targeted treatments, especially BRAF inhibitors (BRAFis), MEK inhibitors (MEKis), Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors (BTKis) and recombinant anti-CD22 immunoconjugates. Results: The following major changes or additions were introduced in these updated guidelines: the clinical relevance of the changes in the classification of splenic B-cell lymphomas and leukemias; the increasingly important diagnostic role of BRAFV600E mutation; and the prognostic role of the immunoglobulin (IG) variable (V) heavy chain (H) (IGHV) mutational status and repertory. We also wish to insist on the specific involvement of bones, skin, brain and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the disease at diagnosis or during the follow-up, the novel targeted drugs (BRAFi and MEKi) used for HCL treatment, and the increasing role of minimal residual disease (MRD) assessment. Conclusion: Here we present recommendations for the diagnosis of HCL, treatment in first line and in relapsed/refractory patients as well as for HCL-like disorders including HCL variant (HCL-V)/splenic B-cell lymphomas/leukemias with prominent nucleoli (SBLPN) and splenic diffuse red pulp lymphoma (SDRPL). Operating nuclear power plants (NPPs) generate and collect large amounts of equipment reliability (ER) element data that contain information about the status of components, assets, and systems. Some of this information is in textual form where the occurrence of abnormal events or maintenance activities are described. Analyses of NPP textual data via natural language processing (NLP) methods have expanded in the last decade, and only recently the true potential of such analyses has emerged. So far, applications of NLP methods have been mostly limited to classification and prediction in order to identify the nature of the given textual element (e.g., safety or non-safety relevant). In this paper, we target a more complex problem: the automatic generation of knowledge based on a textual element in order to assist system engineers in assessing an asset’s historical health performance. The goal is to assist system engineers in the identification of anomalous behaviors, cause–effect relations between events, and their potential consequences, and to support decision-making such as the planning and scheduling of maintenance activities. “Knowledge extraction” is a very broad concept whose definition may vary depending on the application context. In our particular context, it refers to the process of examining an ER textual element to identify the systems or assets it mentions and the type of event it describes (e.g., component failure or maintenance activity). In addition, we wish to identify details such as measured quantities and temporal or cause–effect relations between events. This paper describes how ER textual data elements are first preprocessed to handle typos, acronyms, and abbreviations, then machine learning (ML) and rule-based algorithms are employed to identify physical entities (e.g., systems, assets, and components) and specific phenomena (e.g., failure or degradation). A few applications relevant from an NPP ER point of view are presented as well. Full article

Weeds are unwanted and invasive plants that proliferate and compete for resources such as space, water, nutrients, and sunlight, affecting the quality and productivity of the desired crops. Weed detection is crucial for the application of precision agriculture methods and for this purpose machine learning techniques can be used, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNN). This study focuses on the search for CNN architectures used to detect and identify weeds in different crops; 61 articles applying CNN architectures were analyzed during the last five years (2019–2023). The results show the used of different devices to acquire the images for training, such as digital cameras, smartphones, and drone cameras. Additionally, the YOLO family and algorithms are the most widely adopted architectures, followed by VGG, ResNet, Faster R-CNN, AlexNet, and MobileNet, respectively. This study provides an update on CNNs that will serve as a starting point for researchers wishing to implement these weed detection and identification techniques. Full article
