Air–sea interactions play a pivotal role in shaping cyclone development and evolution. In this context, this study investigates the role of ocean optical properties and solar radiation penetration in modulating subsurface heat content and their subsequent influence on the intensity of Mediterranean cyclones. Using a regional coupled ocean–wave–atmosphere model, we conducted sensitivity experiments for Storm Daniel (2023) comparing two solar radiation penetration schemes in the ocean model component: one with a constant light attenuation depth and another with chlorophyll-dependent attenuation based on satellite estimates. Results show that the chlorophyll-driven radiative heating scheme consistently produces warmer sea surface temperatures (SSTs) prior to cyclone onset, leading to stronger cyclones characterized by deeper minimum mean sea-level pressure, intensified convective activity, and increased rainfall. However, post-storm SST cooling is also amplified due to stronger wind stress and vertical mixing, potentially influencing subsequent local atmospheric conditions. Overall, this work demonstrates that ocean bio-optical processes can meaningfully impact Mediterranean cyclone behavior, highlighting the importance of using appropriate underwater light attenuation schemes and ocean color remote sensing data in coupled models. This study investigates the effects of key atmospheric features on mineral dust emissions and transport in the Sahara–Sahel region, focusing on the Bodélé Depression, during June 2006 and 2011. We use a combination of high-resolution atmospheric simulations (AROME model), satellite observations (MODIS), and reanalysis data (ERA5, ECMWF) to examine the roles of the low-level jet (LLJ), Saharan heat low (SHL), Intertropical Discontinuity (ITD), and African Easterly Jet (AEJ) in modulating dust activity. Our results reveal significant interannual variability in aerosol optical depth (AOD) between the two periods, with a marked decrease in June 2011 compared to June 2006. The LLJ emerges as a dominant factor in dust uplift over Bodélé, with its intensity strongly influenced by local topography, particularly the Tibesti Massif. The position and intensity of the SHL also play crucial roles, affecting the configuration of monsoon flow and Harmattan winds. Analysis of wind patterns shows a strong negative correlation between AOD and meridional wind in the Bodélé region, while zonal wind analysis emphasizes the importance of the AEJ and Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ) in dust transport. Surprisingly, we observe no significant correlation between ITD position and AOD measurements, highlighting the complexity of dust emission processes. This study is the first to combine climatological context and case studies to demonstrate the effects of African monsoon variability on dust uplift at intra-seasonal timescales, associated with the modulation of ITD latitude position, SHL, LLJ, and AEJ. Our findings contribute to understanding the complex relationships between large-scale atmospheric features and dust dynamics in this key source region, with implications for improving dust forecasting and climate modeling efforts. This work proposes a new method to refill fuel cell electric vehicle hydrogen tanks from a storage system in hydrogen refueling stations. The new method uses the storage tanks in cascade to supply hydrogen to the refueling station dispensers. This method reduces the hydrogen compressor power requirement and the energy consumption for refilling the vehicle tank; therefore, the proposed alternative design for hydrogen refueling stations is feasible and compatible with low-intensity renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind farms, or micro-hydro plants. Additionally, the cascade method supplies higher pressure to the dispenser throughout the day, thus reducing the refueling time for specific vehicle driving ranges. The simulation shows that the energy saving using the cascade method achieves 9% to 45%, depending on the vehicle attendance. The hydrogen refueling station design supports a daily vehicle attendance of 9 to 36 with a complete refueling process coverage. The carried-out simulation proves that the vehicle tank achieves the maximum attainable pressure of 700 bars with a storage system of six tanks. The data analysis shows that the daily hourly hydrogen demand follows a sinusoidal function, providing a practical tool to predict the hydrogen demand for any vehicle attendance, allowing the planners and station designers to resize the elements to fulfill the new requirements. The proposed system is also applicable to hydrogen ICE vehicles. Full article

Transmission towers are particularly vulnerable to extreme wind events, which can lead to structural damage or collapse, thereby compromising the stability of power transmission systems. Enhancing the wind-resistant capacity of these towers is therefore critical for improving the reliability and resilience of electrical infrastructure. This study utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the structural response of a 220 kV transmission tower subjected to fluctuating wind loads, effectively capturing the dynamic characteristics of wind-induced forces. A comprehensive dynamic analysis is conducted to account for uncertainties in wind loading and variations in wind direction. Through this approach, this study identifies the most critical wind angle and local structural weaknesses, as well as determines the threshold wind speed that precipitates structural collapse. To improve structural resilience, a concurrent multi-scale modeling strategy is adopted. This allows for localized analysis of vulnerable components while maintaining a holistic understanding of the tower’s global behavior. To mitigate failure risks, the traditional perforated plate reinforcement technique is implemented. The reinforcement’s effectiveness is evaluated based on its impact on load-bearing capacity, displacement control, and stress redistribution. Results reveal that the critical wind direction is 45°, with failure predominantly initiating from instability in the third section of the tower leg. Post-reinforcement analysis demonstrates a marked improvement in structural performance, evidenced by a significant reduction in top displacement and stress intensity in the critical leg section. Overall, these findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the wind-induced fragility of transmission towers and offer practical reinforcement strategies that can be applied to enhance their structural integrity under extreme wind conditions. While rainfall occurs for several reasons, climate change and urbanization influence its frequency and geographical disparities. Although recent research suggests that urbanization may lead to increased rainfall, insights into how urbanization can trigger rainfall remain limited. We selected the Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex, which has minimal orographic and coastal influences, to analyze the urban impact on rainfall. DFW was divided into 256 equal grids (10 km × 10 km) and grouped into four clusters using K-means clustering based on the urbanization ratio. Using Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimator data (with a spatial resolution of 4 km), we examined rainfall exceeding the 95th percentile (i.e., extreme rainfall) on low synoptic days to highlight localized effects. The urban heat island (UHI) effect was estimated based on the average temperature difference between the urban core and the other three non-urban clusters. Multiple rainfall events were monitored on an hourly basis. Potential linkages between urbanization, the UHI, extreme rainfall, wind speed, wind direction, convective inhibition, and convective available potential energy were evaluated. An intense UHI within the DFW area triggered a tornado, resulting in maximum rainfall in the urban core area under high wind speeds and a dominant wind direction. Our findings further clarify the role of urbanization in generating extreme rainfall events, which is essential for developing better policies for urban planning in response to intensifying extreme events due to climate change. Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. Soil fugitive dust (SFD) emissions pose a significant threat to both human health and the environment, highlighting the need for accurate and reliable estimation and assessment in the desert regions of northwest China. This study used climate, soil, and vegetation data from Bayingolin Prefecture (2001–2022) and applied the WEQ model to analyze temporal and spatial variations in total suspended particulate (TSP), PM10, and PM2.5 emissions and their driving factors. The region exhibited high emission factors for TSP, PM10, and PM2.5, averaging 55.46 t km−2 a−1, 27.73 t km−2 a−1, and 4.14 t km−2 a−1, respectively, with pronounced spatial heterogeneity and the highest values observed in Yuli, Qiemo, and Ruoqiang. The annual average emissions of TSP, PM10, and PM2.5 were 3.23 × 107 t, 1.61 × 107 t, and 2.41 × 106 t, respectively. Bare land was the dominant source, contributing 72.55% of TSP emissions. Both total emissions and emission factors showed an overall upward trend, reaching their lowest point around 2012, followed by significant increases in most counties during 2012–2022. Annual precipitation, wind speed, and temperature were identified as the primary climatic drivers of soil dust emissions across all counties, and their influences exhibited pronounced spatial heterogeneity in Bazhou. In Ruoqiang, Bohu, Korla, and Qiemo, dust emissions are mainly limited by precipitation, although dry conditions and sparse vegetation can amplify the role of wind. In Heshuo, Hejing, and Yanqi, stable vegetation helps to lessen wind’s impact. In Yuli, wind speed and temperature are the main drivers, whereas in Luntai, precipitation and temperature are both important constraints. These findings highlight the need to consider emission intensity, land use, or surface condition changes, and the potential benefits of increasing vegetation cover in severely desertified areas when formulating regional dust mitigation strategies. The high spatial resolution of radar data enables the detailed resolution of typhoon vortices and their embedded structures; the assimilation of radar data in the initialization of numerical weather prediction exerts an important influence on the forecasting of typhoon track, intensity, and structures up to at least 12 h. For the case of typhoon Morakot (2009), Taiwan radar data was assimilated to adjust the dynamic and thermodynamic structures of the vortex in the model initialization by the three-dimensional variation data assimilation system in the Advanced Region Prediction System (ARPS). The radial wind was directly assimilated to tune the original unbalanced velocity fields through a 3-dimensional variation method, and complex cloud analysis was conducted by using the reflectivity data. The influence of radar data assimilation on typhoon prediction was examined at the stages of Morakot landing on Taiwan Island and subsequently going inland. The results showed that the assimilation made some improvement in the prediction of vortex intensity, track, and structures in the initialization and subsequent forecast. For example, besides deepening the central sea level pressure and enhancing the maximum surface wind speed, the radar data assimilation corrected the typhoon center movement to the best track and adjusted the size and inner-core structure of the vortex to be close to the observations. It was also shown that the specific humidity adjustment in the cloud analysis procedure during the assimilation time window played an important role, producing more hydrometeors and tuning the unbalanced moisture and temperature fields. The neighborhood-based ETS revealed that the assimilation with the specific humidity adjustment was propitious in improving forecast skill, specifically for smaller-scale reflectivity at the stage of Morakot landing, and for larger-scale reflectivity at the stage of Morakot going inland. The calculation of the intensity-scale skill score of the hourly precipitation forecast showed the assimilation with the specific humidity adjustment performed skillful forecasting for the spatial forecast-error scales of 30–160 km. An EF1 tornado struck Nansha District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, on 28 July 2024. To explore the dynamic and thermodynamic changes during the tornado’s life cycle, high-resolution spatiotemporal data from Foshan’s X-band phased-array radar and the direct wind field synthesis algorithm were used to reconstruct the 3D wind field. The dynamics and 3D structure of the tornado were analysed, with a new parameter, vorticity volume (VV), introduced to study its variation. The observation results indicate that the tornado moved roughly from south to north. During the tornado’s early stage (00:10–00:20 UTC), arc-shaped and annular echoes emerged and positive vorticity increased (peaking at 0.042 s−1). Based on the tornado’s movement direction, the right side of the vortex centre was divergent, while the left side was convergent, whereas the vorticity area and volume continued to grow centrally. During the mature stage (00:23–00:25 UTC), the echo intensity weakened and, at 00:24, the vorticity reached its peak and touched the ground, with the vorticity area and volume also reaching their peaks at the same time. During the dissipation stage (00:25–00:30 UTC), the vorticity and echo features faded and the vorticity area and volume also declined rapidly. The analysis showed that the vorticity volume effectively reflects the tornado’s life cycle, enhancing the understanding of the dynamic and thermodynamic processes during the tornado’s development. Urban heat island circulation (UHIC) determines the wind and thermal environments in urban areas. For Loess Tableland valley towns, the evolution characteristics of the UHIC over this negative terrain are not well understood, and therefore, it is important to investigate the evolution characteristics. A city-scale computational fluid dynamics (CSCFD) model is used, and simulation results are validated by the water tank experiment. The evolution process over such negative terrain can be divided into transient and quasi-steady stages, and in the transient stage, the airflow pattern evolves from thermal convection to city-scale closed circulation, while that in the quasi-steady stage is only city-scale closed circulation. In order to further reveal the characteristics of city-scale closed circulation, the sensitivities of different factors influencing the start time, outflow time, mixing height and heat island intensity are analyzed, and the most significant factors influencing these four parameters are urban heat flux, slope height, slope height, and potential temperature lapse rate, respectively. Finally, the dimensionless mixing height and heat island intensity for the valley town increase by 56.80% and 128.68%, respectively, compared to those for the flat city. This study provides guidance for the location and layout of built-up areas in the valley towns. Full article

Laizhou Bay, a semi-enclosed bay, is prone to storm surges from cold waves due to its geographic and environmental characteristics. This study uses satellite data, in situ measurements, and the MIKE numerical model to analyze storm surges along Laizhou Bay’s coast under no-dike conditions. It examines the surges caused by cold waves with different intensities and directions. This study provides the storm surge disaster risk levels along Laizhou Bay’s coast. The results show that the maximum sustained wind speed during cold waves is distributed between the NW and NE. The NE wind direction causes the most severe storm surge along Laizhou Bay. Under NE-directed cold waves with level 12 wind, the maximum risk areas for Level III and IV are approximately 1341 km2 and 1294 km2, respectively. Dongying, Shouguang, and Hanting exhibit large Level I and II risk zones. The maximum seawater intrusion distance along the Kenli coast is about 41 km. The coastal segment from Kenli to Changyi is most severely affected by storm surges. It is recommended to effectively maintain and heighten seawalls along this segment to mitigate storm surge disasters caused by strong NE winds. Full article

The Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, characterized by high population density, an advanced transportation system, and a concentration of industrial activity, is one of the regions severely affected by O3 pollution in central and eastern China. Using data collected from 251 monitoring stations between 2015 and 2025, this paper analyzed the spatio-temporal variation of 8 h O3 concentrations and instances of exceedance. On the basis of exploring the influence of meteorological factors on regional 8 h O3 concentration, the potential source contribution areas of pollutants under the exceedance condition were investigated using the HYSPLIT model. The results indicate a rapid increase in the 8 h O3 concentration at a rate of 0.91 ± 0.98 μg·m−3·a−1, with the average number of days exceeding concentration standards reaching 41.05 in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration. Spatially, the 8 h O3 concentrations were higher in coastal areas and lower in inland regions, as well as elevated in plains compared to hilly terrains. This distribution was significantly distinct from the concentration growth trend characterized by higher levels in the northwest and lower levels in the southeast. Furthermore, it diverged from the spatial characteristics where exceedances primarily occurred in the heavily industrialized northeastern region and the lightly industrialized central region, indicating that the growth and exceedance of 8 h O3 concentrations were influenced by disparate factors. Local human activities have intensified the emissions of ozone precursor substances, which could be the key driving factor for the significant increase in regional 8 h O3 concentrations. In the context of high temperatures and low humidity, this has contributed to elevated levels of 8 h O3 concentrations. When wind speeds were below 2.5 m·s−1, the proportion of 8 h O3 concentrations exceeding the standards was nearly 0 under almost calm wind conditions, and it showed an increasing trend with rising wind speeds, indicating that the potential precursor sources that caused high O3 concentrations originated occasionally from inland regions, with very limited presence within the study area. This observation implies that the main cause of exceedances was the transport effect of pollution from outside the region. Therefore, it is recommended that the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration adopt economic and technological compensation mechanisms within and between regions to reduce the emission intensity of precursor substances in potential source areas, thereby effectively controlling O3 concentrations and improving public living conditions and quality of life. Research on helicopter stability is essential for the design of flotation systems and serves as a primary basis for evaluating wind and wave resistance. The drainage volume method and fluid–solid coupling method are commonly used for calculating floating characteristics. However, the drainage volume method ignores the flexibility of airbags and their interaction with the helicopter, while the fluid–solid coupling method is computationally intensive. In contrast, the analysis of a helicopter’s hydrostatic floating characteristics is a static problem. It suffices to obtain relevant results when the helicopter reaches a stationary state, without the need to accurately simulate the dynamic process of achieving that state. Therefore, this paper proposes an equivalent calculation method, in which the hydrostatic effect of water on the helicopter is represented by the hydrostatic pressure applied across the entire flotation system. The finite element method (FEM) is then employed to determine the final static state, and the results are compared with those from the drainage volume method and available experimental data to validate the reliability of the proposed approach. To elucidate the influence mechanism of airbags and flexible connecting straps on the lateral static stability of helicopters, this paper analyzes airbag positions at various heeling angles and examines the impact of different internal airbag pressures. The results indicate that the main factor affecting lateral static stability is the displacement of the airbags. This displacement causes variations in the airbag’s buoyancy and center of buoyancy, thereby reducing the lateral heeling moment. Full article

The long-term trend of coastal upwelling under global warming has been a research focus in recent years. Based on datasets including sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface wind, air–sea heat fluxes, ocean currents, and sea level pressure, this study explores the long-term trend and underlying mechanisms of the Oman coastal upwelling intensity in summer during 1993–2018. The results indicate a persistent decrease in SST within the Oman upwelling region during this period, suggesting an intensification trend of Oman upwelling. This trend is primarily driven by the strengthened positive wind stress curl (WSC), while the enhanced net shortwave radiation flux at the sea surface partially suppresses the SST cooling induced by the strengthened positive WSC, and the effect of horizontal oceanic heat transport is weak. Further analysis revealed that the increasing trend in the positive WSC results from the nonuniform responses of sea level pressure and the associated surface winds to global warming. There is an increasing trend in sea level pressure over the western Arabian Sea, coupled with decreasing atmospheric pressure over the Arabian Peninsula and the Somali Peninsula. This enhances the atmospheric pressure gradient between land and sea, and consequently strengthens the alongshore winds off the Oman coast. However, in the coastal region, wind changes are less pronounced, resulting in an insignificant trend in the alongshore component of surface wind. Consequently, it results in the increasing positive WSC over the Oman upwelling region, and sustains the intensification trend of Oman coastal upwelling. Full article

Wind turbine blades face significant challenges from stochastic wind loads, impacting structural integrity. Traditional analysis often isolates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) from Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the design process. This study bridges this gap by integrating BIM forward design with CFD simulation. A universal BIM modeling framework is developed for rapid blade modeling, which is compatible with ANSYS Workbench 2022 R1 through intermediate format conversion. The influence of wind load on the blades under various wind speed conditions is analyzed, and the results indicate a significant correlation between wind load intensity and blade structural response. The maximum windward pressure reaches 4.96 kPa, while the leeward suction peaks at −6.28 kPa. The displacement at the tip and middle part of the blades significantly increases with the increase in wind speed. The growth rate of displacement between adjacent speeds rises from 1.20 to 1.94, and the overall increase rate within the entire range rises from 1.02 to 4.16. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using BIM forward design in accurate performance analysis, and also extends the value of BIM in wind energy. Furthermore, a bidirectional information flow is established, where BIM provides geometry for CFD, and simulation results will inform BIM design refinement. Full article
